Ok so im not sure exactly what the problem is, or where the nosie is coming from.

I got a 300tdi P reg disco and on fri afternoon started getting this squeeling noise from the front. This only happens when moving, so cant be an engine problem. Seems to be coming from the drivers side front wheel

Have just jacked the vehicle up and tried to move the weel to check for bearing play, if i hold the wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock and move from side to side, theres no play, but if i hold at 12 and 6 o'clock i got minor play. The same has also happened on the passenger side, with slightly more movement!! is this meant to be there?

i have had squealing from the brake pads as they had a stone stuck in them and also a squealing from the front wheel bearings, no play but also no grease in them hence the squealing

There was slight play (top to bottom) in both front wheels, so maybe if i adjusted them up and grease them it may be ok!!! No stone between the disks, im sorry to say it hasnt been 'Off road' for a few weeks now!!

Im doing my usual 65 mile daily round trip to work and back in the series 3 now ! All Week! until i get the disco fixed have already booked the week of traction in the local hospital to sort my back out!!

Check the wheel bearings are greased up and take up the play in them. could be they have gone dry the inner one is most likely.

I know you said it only happends at speed but I would still check the fan drive belt. These are famous for squeeling on the 300 TDi!!

If the belt has a shine on the flat side it could be glazed from rubbing over the tentioner pully that tends to go out of alinement.
Start the engine and bring it up to about 2000 rpm and see if there is any squeel, if there is then hold the revs and give the belt a light squirt of WD40 - it should stop squeeling.
If this works then look down the line of the belt from the battery side to check that the belt is not being pull off line by the tentioner pully - if all is okay then change the belt. If the pully is out of alinement then add a 2mm spacer behind one side of the pully body (where it touches the block) to bring it back in and your problems should be sorted.

Could be the power steering pump on the way out?

Happened on mine, pulley goes wonky. Belt squeals(at first),

then starts shredding, luckily caught it be for the belt gave up,

and started smashing around in the engine bay.

Just a thought, i'm not much good with the oily bits i'm afraid.

If it was the power steering pump wouldnt it squeel all the time? not just when moving? as is the fault on mine, only happens when the vehicle is in motion. The engine idles & revs quietly!

well heres the update, it wasnt the wheel bearings, nor the power steering pump, nor the breaks, it was a collapsed UJ on the fron propshaft according to the garage!! so not as expensive as i first thought!!!
