« on: June 19, 2005, 17:57:34 »
AFTER USING MY AIR CON A LOT TODAY (OHHHHH YESSSSSS :(biglove): ) , NOTICED THE CARPETS DAMP AND PUDDLES UNDER THE CAR?
IS THIS DOWN TO A DISCONNECTED BREATHER? WHERE HAS IT COME FROM? WHAT IS IT?ETC ETC

MY USUAL REASON FOR DAMP CARPETS WAS THE WATER LAPPING OVER THE DOOR TOPS !

puddles under car
the puddles underneath are from the drain, all air con systems do it,the condensation has to go somewhere.i would guess that the damp carpets are due to the drain pipe either not sealed properly so water escapes down the outside or condensation is forming on the outside of the drain pipe and then running down onto the carpet

if you lie under the car the drain pipes come out in the trans tunnel either side of the gearbox about level with the dash, there are two little black rubber hose ends if its like mine, if you see where they are you can sort of guess where they are in the car. they do get kinked and pinched where they go under the carpet causing the damp carpets you speak of

AIR CON LEAK?

Well, I'm not the only one then!

We set off (very late :( ) to the Eastnor show on Saturday - air con at full blast (very nice 8) ).

Driving along the M4, I notice what appears to be smoke coming out of the middle dash vents :?  No smell? Not hot, air con still working?! I turned off the air con and the smoke (?) slowly stopped. Switched it back on and out came the smoke (?) again ... :-k

Everyone (yes, even the kids  ) start looking around the car for other signs of smoke. I can see some by your feet daddy ... air con off, take next exit

After taking the center console out ('kin heck!), I could see a couple of pipes going into the transmission tunnel - I crawled under the car (jolly easy with 1" lift and 235/85's   ) and found a rubber "thing" with a hole. Well, I wiggled and poked and pulled and ... got an arm covered in mukky water as the "thing" came off and the blocked water poured out.

Round to the other side - same story! But I was ready for the mukky water this time!

I put it all back together (cleaned up my arms) and set off again. This time, no smoke from the vents \:D/

you got it gords they get dust and dirt in them then the moisture from the aircon helps glue it all together and blocks them backing the water up into the drip tray until it gets blown through the system out the vents

Ideally, not the sort of thing you want to find out about while parked up in some pub car park, somewhere in Slough

Air con working?
I'm running my aircon a lot at the moment (hooray its summer  :D ), but it doesn't get anywhere near as cold as in my car, also I haven't noticed any puddles underneath (yet)....

I'm suspecting that it is playing up or just simply not working - Can anybody suggest anywhere/anybody I can take it to in the East Midlands?

Or indeed anywhere?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim.

It might need re-gassing?

Had my 300TDi regassed last week for £60, nice & cold now, the system was totally empty of refrigerant but seemed to hold up the vacumn & over pressure test okay.

Re-gassing
I suspected it needed re-gassing, but I'm no expert (not even close!).

What I'm wondering is whether anyone knows someone or somewhere that I can take it to have it checked and / or the work done.

Anyone :?:

A lot of people tend to forget the air-con until the heat wave arrives.  Result - it don't work!

If the system is not used, the seals on the compressor shaft can dry out from lack of lubrication, and this is where the gas escapes.  It is a good idea to use the system occasionally (weekly for about 20 mins) to circulate the oil.

Once the engine has warmed up, the air-con makes for a very effecient de-mister in winter - try it!
