A/C Fans Dead?
« on: June 24, 2005, 16:57:58 »
I've been told by my local independant LR garage (www.aaadubai.com) that both of the A/C condenser cooling fans are dead and need replacing sooner rather than later to avoid frying the condenser in the 40+ celcius heat here in Dubai. They say it's quite a common failure.

How can I check the fans and the relay myself, or what else can I check before putting my hand in my pocket for 2 new fans?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'd have thought you could check the fans with some wire by connecting them directly to the battery.  Check the relay with a mulitmeter and check for voltage being supplied to the fans.  SOmetimes under load you will find the voltage drops near zero as the relay contacts are burned and work like a resistor.

Thanks for the pointers RRB - I've now tried taking a +ve feed directly from the battery to each of the fans, but neither of them turned so it looks like I need a couple of new fans after all.  :(
