Just how noisy are mud terrain tyres ?

Need to get some new tyres for my D1 300TDi, was considering either BFG Mud Terrains or Goodyear MT/R but am wondering how noisy they are on tarmac ? - is it just an intrusive rumble or ear defender time ?

I Use Amazons on mine, and not too bad at all, hardly notice the noise

I've got Mud Terrains on my disco and they just make a low moaning sound, allthough that could be SWMBO!

In my experience the MT/R is slightly quieter than the BFG.

I'll second that - I have had both and GY MTRs are noticably quieter in comparison to BFGs especially when they are cold.

That said, the noise is very bearable, and not intrusive in any way!

Don't know whether it applies to BFG, but Goodyear's seem to get louder with use...

Personally I like All Terrains for the mixture of road/off road that I do (90/10% at best guestimate).

I use Goodyear AT/Rs which also last much better than any mud tyre and are not really any noisier than a more road-biased pattern.

Goodyear MT/Rs on the racer.

I'd noticed that on my BFG MTs

Maybe the rubber is getting older and stiffer which could cause a bit more noise on the road.

A genuine, first life, branded MT isn't that noisy. More aggressive tyres however...

I once ran Michelin XCL's - very intrusive (and a wee bit hairy on wet roundabouts)
I now run the BFG MT's  - not intrusive in a modern Defender.
I've also run Dirt Devils periodically - very intrusive.

IME, the MT/Rs are quieter.

Just don't ask which is the best beween the BFG and the GY, 'cos you're on your own there! :wink:

Hi Got Technic Amazon on mine and there is hardly any noise, no droning even at 60-70.

Very good in the sticky stuff aswell.

A remould MT tyre might be marginally quieter as slightly softer rubber coumpound has to be used in making remoulds. Having said that there's hardly any difference between my General Grabber MT's and the Technic Tyre MT remoulds I have- the GG's are a little bit noisier but I expect to get a few more km out of them. When I put my Geolander AT's back on- I don't suddenly think to myself "gosh it's quiet now!" either. 4x4's with big diesel engines are inherently noisy anyway with all the engine, drive train and suspension clunking that goes on.

In the end it's something you'll get used to. You can either ignore it or turn the stereo up.

That's the problem. I've not had anything other than MT on the motor for the last 2 to 3 years. I keep thinking about putting some on to guage the difference.

but seriously.... I put BFG MT's on my TD Defender and there is a rumble but not that you'd notice over the normal engine/road noise. However the difference off road is more than worth the noise and wet road handling issues!!!!  :lol:  :lol:  :lol:

I've got Goodyear MT/R's fitted and dont notice any noise.
Had them on for a year now.
Maybe something to do with the roaring V8!!

I have run both BFG and GY MTRs , these were 255/85, and 265/75 respectively.

there is very little between them, but I have found that the GY handled better on road than the bfg (could be the profile difference) and was quieter. The GY strikes me as a cross between a AT and an MT, but with more bais toward MT, if that makes sense!

off road there is little between them in my view.

If I where you Neil my preference would be to opt for the GY.

JUST DONT BUY GRIZZLY CLAWS, sorry was i shouting? Superb off road but god are they load, i have had simexes and am on BFG m/t's....very civilised by comparison. Not too intrusive as for which is best , who knows depends on the day just dont buy grizzlies!(unless you live offroad)
