eek :( Tonight I noticed that Ive been leaving a trail of oil drops around the streets.
Just noticed down our little close spots every 1/2 meter or so and leading upto me reversing onto the driveway.
Its too wet at the moment to stick my head under, but is there anything common that would cause this kind of dripping. Ive not known it drop any/much oil or use any for about 4 months of ownership. Dipstick is now almost dry :(

a landrover, if its got oil in its gonna leak :D
look around the front timing case, could be a front crank seal
round the bellhousing, could be a rear crank seal
you really need to get under and have a look could be from anywhere

Heard from the garage yesterday, aparently at the rear of the engine the gaskets are knackered and basically throwing oil out as fast as you put in it :( So when he started to investigate further, there are some studs in the head that have been stripped at some point, and as such arent allowing whatever sits on top to bolt down tightly enough in order to make a seal.
He's going to try and repair the studs, or send the head away to have new ones welded in. Sounds rather scarey and expensive.
How much and where would I get a new head for a Mpi from ? He's said there is a very slim chance that it might come to that.

i believe its the same engine as in a rover 220 so should be easy enough to track one down from a breakers if i was you though id stick a V8 in it, much cheaper to and easier to find and you wont have to say you drive an MPi :lol:

just out of curiosity what mpg do you get out of the mpi?

I reckon about 18, but being honest its not running right at the moment, I have a wandering Idle and it varies from being 600ish to about 1200 depending on its mood.
I think its the variable resister thingie on the air intake, theres a part number on the back of it, cant remember off the top of my head, but I should be getting "truck" back tomorrow (Tuesday!)

If the head is from the Rover 220, what about a 220 GTI Turbo engine instead?
Might make things a little more 'interesting' :twisted:
I assume all this trouble is where your horrible little loan car comes into play.

Get a V8 thats what i get 18mpg out of mine, a bit more on a long run

Well just heard from the garage all back together but no cooling fans now :(
Its not the sender and if they short the relay the fans start. Any ideas before I agree to yet more cost for them to find out the problem ?

Ok more on this....
Collecting it back from the garage in the morning anyway.
The gauge sender unit works fine, the relay works fine when earthed and the fan kicks in. There seems to be a problem in the ECU connection.
He recommend for now a manual fan switch to kick the relay in, and then look at a new sender mounted somewhere to control the relay.
Is the relay controlled by the ECU and are there any good tips to maybe bypass the ECU and kick the relay in automatically ?

Don't know about the Mpi, but on my engine, there are 2 coolant temperature sensors... one supplies the guage and the other sends data to the ECU for fuel control, etc.
Just a thought... if you have 2, the ECU sensor might be faulty.
Failing that, you can put a thermostatically controlled fan controller in (from the likes of Demon Tweeks / Merlin Motorsport) and have that control the fan directly.

According to the rave cd thingie I have two, but I only remember seeing one that I know has been replaced, not by me tho, the X126 Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor.
To eliminate the sensor if I was to ground this whilst the engine is running, should the fan kick or, or is the ECM clever enough to want a particular resistance?
In other words any volunteers to ground there and tell me :)
Im thinking that maybe the replacement isnt the correct one.
Failing that Im putting in a switch to ground the relay contacts until I get chance to fit an additional sensor of some description.
