Hi to all.

The '88 Classic 3.5 E.F.I.  has just acquired a strange vibration.

Only at 30 M.P.H,  the whole car shakes.

The only way I can describe it is that it is like driving a 44 ton artic truck over the rumble strips between lane 1 and the hard shoulder of a motorway.

Tyre pressures are O.K. and wheels are all balanced.


Any Ideas ??

where to start, prop shafts, bearings off them at both ends transfer box and diffs

is it thru the steering or seat

Hi  and  thanks 4 the replies.

The vibration is all through the car at floor level.

The verdict comes from passengers in the front and the rear seats, all asked the same question.

The problem with a 4x4 is that all the transmission vibration comes through the floor.

Start with the propshafts, check the UJs for wear/collapse.
Check the props aren't bent by spinning them slowly.
Check for balance weights that have come loose from the props or loose/missing bolts in the flanges.

Check the wheels.tyres for missing weights/nuts etc, mud inside the rims and any strange inflation, bulges etc in the sidewalls.

If nothing obvious try removing one propshaft and running in difflock, then try the other and see if you can identify which end of the car is at fault.

That should keep you busy, more importantly I hope this identifies the problem, otherwise it's going to get oily/messy/expensive :cry:

The disconnecting and running in diff-lock sounds the best idea.

It's the best suggestion I've had to-day, asking "Experts :shock: "

Looks like it is going to be in the workshop on 4 big axle stands.

Sounds just like mine!

I had similar problems and it was loose king pins on my front axles
