I need help again :roll:
My ABS is intermittently failing/faulting - i.e. the warning light comes on. It's been on a tester and the nearside rear is showing as intermittent failure.
Before I replace the sensor :shock: I want to check/adjust/replace the rear wheel bearings and check the front ones (they were replaced very recently - do they settle/losen?). The problem is, I don't know how to do it.
Is anyone free this weekend to help me with this? [-o<
Anyone got any sensors lying around? :wink:

If the bearings are new it's possible they will settle in, if the races wern't driven fully home. This can happen if you don't use a press but shouldn't happen if you paid someone to do it for you, not that quick anyhow.
One of the mags printed the revised adjusting procedure which is like for most other cars, ie tighten up then back of so many flats, trouble is I don't recal how many flats. The manual says you measure the endfloat of the hub, now here's a catch, with the hub oil seal replaced and correctly positioned 4mm inside the recess, the oil seal's wiper lip stops the hub floating, making it difficult to measure endfloat. I use a screwdriver to lever the hub against this pressure from the lip to measure endfloat with a feeler guage, it's quicker. Just screw the second nut on a few turns to lever against.
What's the endfloat, sorry can't remember.

The ABS sensor on the rear is in-line with the axle and sits hard up against the back of the sensor ring on the back of the hub.
If you've had a knackered bearing on the back then due to the movement possible it's very likely that the sensor has been pushed out ever so slightly and now the hub is tight again it's not mating up to the sensor - happened to me a few times.
Quick fix - get something blunt against the sensor and give it a few taps home with LR special tool #1 :wink:

The front wheel bearings have been done (by a garage) very recently. The rears were not done, but I reckon they're a bit slack ... but not confidently knowing what they should be like, I'm not sure.
I really can't afford to take it to a garage again, so soon - hence the call for help! I'm happy to travel a reasonable distance if there is anyone who could help this weekend!?

I may be able to help you out Gordon but it depends on work at the mo as i may be truck driving on sunday, should know by friday either way but i would be happy to give you a hand on sunday if i,m free, cant do sat as i have the kids and its their school fair which the wife is helping organise so i have to take them up there when it opens

Well, I can try and obtain one!
To just check/adjust wheel bearings (rear in particular, possibly front), are any parts or consumables needed? Gaskets, seals, grease, etc?
