I have been told about a program called trillion that mimics msn. You could try that.

MSN uses your IE settings to get on the internet, so if you have to use a proxy for some reason and IE doesnt have it set then it will whinge

u havent got firewall rules on your pc to allow certain apps to work do you?

as 7 is a different app to 6.2 (as far as file size and the like is concerned) some firewalls which control app launching will require you to intervene and allow 7 to go on tinternet

it probably still thinks 6.2 is being used and as 7 isnt the same app it wont let it out.

I would try the firewall route first. You can sit there and wait forever if it won't allow any outgoing messages

I've got Messenger but I got fed up of it kicking in as soon as I boot up so changed the settings - nowadays I keep forgetting to load it and log on unless I think hard about it!
