Anybody done it , is much modifacation involved, what box is beast for a 90 :?:
-
I've got a TDI auto 90, the box is a ZF 4speed out of a Disco, it needed no modding but i have a 300tdi which is the r380 transmission tunnel, if yours is earlier then you will need to modify the tunnel. The shifter comes out of the center seat box and that is coverd with an Ali sheet and then carpet, very neat (Turn the old gearlever gaitor inside out and it is a bottle holder). The work was done By Martin Dransfield in Dewsbury (Landrover Enthusiast bod). I saw a TD that had been converted to a V8 auto and that had the tunnel and bulkhead modified (with a lump hammer i think, it looked awful)
-
Yep.. I've done it.
The ZF box is your best bet IMHO.. and there are plenty about usually.
What engine do you have ?
-
It's a 86 90 with the origenal naturaly asmatic diesel engine
if i can stretch the money that will change as well.

You need to, a NAD will struggle like hell to pull you with an auto on it. Uncles NAD struggled to pull its self with a manual.

 I know all about that :D
I,v had it in mind to upgrade the engine for a long time' but arthritis is makeing gear changeing a real problem now, so the gear box has to come first besides im used to chugging along in the slow lane

You might get a good deal on a engine + box from a Disco, one went on Ebay a week or so ago. Good Luck!

I think you would need a diesl box for a diesel engine anyway, and a lot of s/h auto boxes are from V8s, which don't fit.

Yes, you do, the gears on the V8 are set up differently and the bell housing is not the same. Thats what I was told anyway.

Im juts bought a 300tdi with auto and Im putting in my 90 hybrid (basically a 90) as we speak.
You would need a tdi though as the 2.5 td and the 2.5 is no way near powerful\enough.
Keep an eye of the forum as I'll post the full conversion in the next few days mate

I saw a TD auto advertised a year and a half ago so it must be possible. A bit of a nail though i expect
-
Im sure a TD auto will work but I find even the Tdi is a little under powered so I would be wairy.

Thats cos your used to having a proper engine. I got the TDI auto after running a 4.0 Jeep and it took some getting used to. No problem offroad but a bit of a b****r on the motorway.

I know what you mean!! I was running a V8 auto. TDi auto was fine till I used it to tow the Hybrid. Blimey was it slow!!! Now putting ther same engine and box in the hybrid buts it off road only. Going to intercool upgrade the Disco to see how it helps.

EXCELLANT!!!
Thats exactly what I wanted.
Used to have a cubby box but when I started doing the engine change I ran over it DOH!!!!
I'll just put the shifter there now and a little box of some sort.
Many thanks Jim-Willy, really helpful!
-
That little cubby box just fits behind the gearlever (After a bit of modification) and only cost £20.
