Hi all, this is my 1st time on mudclub(im usually on difflock) I dont know what to do, ive got a 200tdi Disco,a 1989,its good offroad and reasonably economical,it sometimes gets a pasting offroad.BUT what did landrover in 1989 make them out of?sticky back plastic and bog roll tubes?ive forgotten how many times ive glued the interior back together!!!!!...no wonder Rover have gone bust if this is how they put cars together.So...im thinking of chopping it in and getting a 4.0 jeep cherokee they look much better built AND theyve got that 4 litre motor!!!!......before anyone says"why dont you get a RRC".....sorry but if early discos have owt to go by I dont want a RRC.Have I opened a can of worms?....what do you all think?.........and try not to be too bias...........cheers

Silly boy Pike get a 90 :D

XJ Cherokees rot like hell. When mine died it had a noisy back diff, rot across the roof by the gutters, rot accross the tailgate by the hinges and b****y huge holes in the floor! It also pee'd hypoid from every orrofice and everytime one leak was cured it sprang another. Parts prices are insane and spurious bits take some finding and our local dealer was c**p. No chassis on the Jeep either, If i backed mine onto my Bro's drive the body twisted to the point where you couldn't close the tailgate properly. The back seat is uncomfortable aswell, everybody moaned about riding in the back. The engine is wonderfull though, I loved mine, 12mpg and i didn't care (I do miss that POWER button on the dash). The rots just more obvious on a Disco.

DM!
You get worse. I can't see for tears rolling down my face.
Got for the Jeep's my vote.

i've had my disco for about 18 mounths now and its done all i need it to do
having said that i am now putting her (daisy  ) up for sale
not for any bad reason but last time we went greenlaning i scratched her quite bad, and she worth to much money to do that to, i've replaced her with a nissan patrol 4.2 diesel that i found on e-bay, for quite cheap needed a bit of work ( nearly done :D ) and its a monster off road.
the disco is half way between a rangie and a defender and a good comprimise i think for the money, but each to there own!
if i scratch my nissan i just get the paint brush out again :D

sorry mate I dont want a 90 I had a go in my mates td5 90 at the weekend and I didnt like it at all...I suppose it depends what you want but he paid £12500 + vat for his and I just couldnt see where the money went.

go for the cherry if you can afford to run it allthough lpg is popular on 4.0 cherry s, rust well i have owned 3 cherry s all had a rust bubble near the roof gutter nothing to worry about tho ,they do have galvanised dipped bodies -parts prices are mortgage like but thankfully you wont need many as the cherry is mega reliable , rear diff can rumble after 70 thou miles , overall a great car . small lift- quick disconects- underbody protection thats it ,disco had 1 that was enough for me , the kids got sea sick on long trips interior fell apart over 18mnths , parts well the list was long but they are cheap-ish 2.5 300tdi gutless or felt gutless after the 4.0 cherry , great driveing position economical very-capable off road nice to drive on the lanes woefull on the road ,the cherry feels rock solid compaired to disco but is an expensive toy. J33P there is only one .

Are you looking at getting a newish one. I had a look at an old cherokee before i got the disco, but well built it was not. Im not saying the disco is any better but you can carry sticky back plastic with you and if you have not got any there will be a man just round the corner that has and it won't cost you the earth. Chances are you can fix it in the field as well.
Don't realy know about the jeep only that a mates miss has a wrangler 40ltr never goes off road i have just put new disc's and pads on it for them he got them from main dealer "ouch". could not find anywhere else local.
At the end of the day it's a choice.
Mine would be the disco

Why not look at a Shogun?? They are everybit as nice as the Jeep but so much less dosh . . . . .

Cherokee deffo
Yes the early ones had hit or miss rust problem especially I believe on rear floor but the 4 litre engines are good for 250k +miles
If you search around parts arn't that bad on price
Off road they love it

In my time, I've owned 2 300 Tdi Disco's and one of the first 2.5 diesel Cherokee's - I liked both models a lot, but if push came to shove, I'd have to chose the Jeep  . Used it a lot off road and laning, it was great out of the box with no mods! The last Disco I had sustained light damage as a result of driving once down a local green lane I had driven many times in the Jeep with no ill effects...
Still, my daily drive now, both on and off road, is a 90 CSW and I wouldn't swap this for either a Disco or a Jeep! 8)
Cheers,
Nick

Guy over the road has a cheeroke and he loves it but he never goes off road in it. He used to have a series 3 and used it off road a fair amount.
A month ago he had a front end smash (boy racer came round a corner on the wrong side of the road) impact speed was estimated at 5-10 mph and his insurance company wrote his car off!!!!!
I have driven a TD5 110 and hated it.
Get a 200 TDi 90 and fit an uprated intercooler. Parts are as "cheap as chips", 25-30 mpg, 140-150 bhp, its not afraid of water, and there is no interior trim to come off
-
its ok saying "get a 200tdi 90" but have you seen what they fetch these days its stupid money for what you get(or dont get) ......and im not sure about gettting a 2.5 n/a diesel, too slow, and noisy and ive heard reports about bad reliability and as this is my daily drive to work and back I need summat thats gonna start on a cold morning. If Landrover designed a 90,the germans built it and the japs put their engine in it it would be perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Disco
-
90's are like marmite you love them or hate them :D
Disco or Jeep or somthing else, you mind will be made up when your standing in front of it & the price is right :)

You are right, Landys are very badly built. But so was the Jeep and the parts and servicing are insane money, XJ's are good offroad but the steering joints are exposed and are expensive to replace, all that negatice stuff in my last post isnt exaggerated, it really did have all those problems, it was a crate with a loverly engine!

There is a reason the US army drive Defenders!
RRC are a good buy at the moment, the dash is a bit hard on all but the soft-dash classics, and you wouldn't buy one of these to trash. All cars subjected to mud will rot, you can't stop it. Thing is you can fix a landie, new sill on a RRC/Disco cost £50 a side pluss some effort, and that's a lot of metal for the money.
It's been said and I am forced to agree, Mitsis are often less abused and give you a lot of car for the cash, often in better nick, less oily etc. etc.
But then did you go to Whaddon, it was green ovals as far as the eye could see.
