Just had the tax renewal form through for the Disco and there was a leaflet about  new MOTs being logged on a database that will enable you to check on the MOT status of a motor before you buy it as well!  :?

Yep true, they are all on a database anyway, but at the moment the books are returned to VOSA and entered by hand.

But as we speak they are converting all mot stations over to computer setup, with dedicated modem lines to transmit tests directly through to the database

The tester is required to Log on to the VOSA computer before he starts your test. He remains logged on until your test is finished - gone are the days of walking in & out in ten minutes 'cos the tester is a mate of yours, as the length of time taken for a test is recorded and analysed.

First thing he does is enter all your vehicles details. Theoretically everything should be in the database, but not all are - and not all are correct.  My 2A is a '63, but was returned as a '71!  I queried this with VOSA afterwards, and apparently is not uncommon - you can take your LOGbook/MOT to the nearest VOSA centre and they'll issue a new MOT.  But since the VOSA database is supplied byDVLA you'd think they would match.  They blame data corruption in transfer.  Doesn't really inspire confidence, and at the moment I have paperwork saying the old girl is '63 & 71 - which could prove interesting if I wanted to sell!

The advantages are that you will be able tax/sorn your vehicle on-line, dodgy MOTs should be easy to spot & the powers that be will know more!

Just bear in mind that the copper behind you now only has to input your Reg number to  a handheld unit to find out if you are taxed/mot'd and insured!

Also to make it more tricky, they have the capability in the cars to read the number plate electronically and show all details and flash anything that it not right, tax mot insurance etc

In nottingham (and other areas I presume) they have vans that park up and scan the tax discs as they drive by

I read the article and got the impession it'll be the end of the free retest should yours fail first time.

Because the tester has to log back in a second time to retest your vehicle you pay again

More money for the government, and if someone reports your smoky diesel do you then have to have an test  :?:

AT the moment it seems to be thick black smoke and limited  to commercial vehicles, scroll down to page 38

More useful info:
(sorry - can't remember how to make them links!)

Free retests have been at the discretion of the testing station for a long time.  Most offer them  to get/keep trade, in the same way that some discount the fee.  Some will without a doubt stop.
