I've been following the black smoke thread which has sparked an interesting discussion of bypassing the EGR on the 300Tdi engine.  I'm interested in how many of us have disabled the EGR either by removing it completely or by disconnecting the cables...so here's a poll.  I couldn't put the poll in the defender forum at the same time but the question is obviously open to all 300Tdis.

James, my EGR is still connected and looks intact, but I have inserted a steel solid blanking gasket between the valve and the manifold.

there wasnt an option for this so i clicked on the removed one.

You're so 300ist.  TD5's have EGR as well you know  :wink:

I've clicked on 'blanked', as that's what I did (similar to what Dave did).

Mine's still intact on a TD5, but I'm not sure if it's still working :)

It used to make a noise, and doesn't any more, so maybe it's broken of its own accord.

Why are people disconnecting them?  I thought they slightly improved emissions?  I could probably answer this by checking previous threads but I'm playing catch-up on thousands of threads  :oops:

I've blanked mine too, except I've put the blanking plate at the t-joint on the intercooler to inlet hose. I couldn't remove the bolts on the manifold flange.

Apologies to all TD5s.  I didn't know if the EGR played a more integral role in the emissions control of the TD5 than it does on the 300Tdi so I didn't know if that would bias the poll (if the EGR couldn't be removed).  Question obviously applies to TD5s too then.

You'll probably find that the actuator has packed up.  I had one do that.
As for why, just disconnect the EGR valve from the inlet manifold and take a look inside.  If yours is anything like mine was, it'll be full of oily gunk.  With the EGR blanked off your car will only be sucking in clean air.  Yes, the EGR does reduce NOx emissions, but as they aren't part of the MOT, who cares?  It's probably something they had to do for the US market.

I blanked mine and put a straight pipe from the inter cooler to the turbo

Well, I have blanked mine where the pipe meets the valve inlet but left the connections alone.

The most popular choice seems to be to put the blanking plate (ERR4698) between the EGR and the manifold and leave everything else in place (otherwise you either need to blank the top intercooler hose or get a straight through one).  I'm going to pop down to LR later to see if they have the part (Paddock's didn't have one).  Do I need to buy 2 new gaskets to go either side of the blanking plate if I'm replacing the EGR on top of it?

I would have thought that 1 on the manifold side would be sufficient.  The TD5 doesn't have any gaskets there, so it's not a worry for us  :wink:

I'm surprised that LR sell a blank to defeat the EGR valve, as they wouldn't fit it if it wasn't required by law.  It's true that the test vehicle for homologation has to pass the standard but then production cars are allowed to deviate by a small margin, but strictly speaking you shouldn't be doing it.

That said, the oils black mess does nothing for your engine so I'd bin it too.

blanked egr removed pipe and welded plate over hole in intercooler to inlet manifold pipe, i notice theres an extra box on the down pipe .is this the particulate filter ,is it needed for mot and iff not can you knock it out or do you have to replace the pipe ? thanks bilge rat...........

My 300Tdi went for an intercooler implant complete with it's EGR.
When she returned from theartre, the EGR and Catalytic Converter had been Amputated. :shock:  :shock:  :shock:  :shock:

Now when the lights go Green. :mrgreen: :mrgreen:  :mrgreen:  
 The fat bloke in the smokey disco is nowhere to be seen :(bigsmoke):  :(bigsmoke):

Hi Gordon  :)  :)  :)

I went to Alisport
I had the big intercooler with silicone hoses and some ali pipework as they removed the EGR.
They also removed the catalytic converter and fitted a straight through
pipe
While they were at it they tweaked the Turbo and Fuel pump
I'm not sure what difference it's all made to fuel economy, as i tend to use the extra GET UP AND GO to the max :shock:  :shock:  :shock:
The only problem now is that due to the need for a replacement transfer box, i,m wondering if with the extra grunt she'll pull taller gearing  :?:  :?:  :?:
Can't remember exactly but i think Alisport's bill was about £540  :?:  :?:  :?:

There didn't seam to be any more top speed. Thats why i'm wondering about different gearing(if anyone knows)

Hills don't need so many down changes and where previously i'd be running out of steam, i'm now still accelerating :(biglaugh):  :(biggrin):

The only down side is some extra smoke

you know you want to do it have a go :(bloodshot): mines a 200 and after the bigger intercooler and a little play it shot up the hills :wink:  :twisted:
