Have just seen Dave's post about land rover waives and how disco 3 owners dont seem to waive(see http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=10981&highlight= )
Daves the second person in the last few days who I have heard say this.
In this months LRO theres a letter about just this on page 25.
Is the land rover waive becoming a thing of the past?
It came as a total shock to me when got my first landy back in jan that strange people will waive at you and flash lights. I thought it was because I was driving badly or something had /was in the process of falling off.
It wasnt untill I was told by a local independant land rover garage that "no its ok. Its a land rover thing" that I twigged that other landy drivers where waiving simply because of felowship.
Now driving around I'll always waive at people in a landy (not so much disco's or freelanders as tends to be either family's or people who wont waive back anyway)and less and less people will waive back.
Is this true all over or just up here in the north east?
Dont let the waive die out.
-
Sadly it seems to be true all over I think.
Seems to be the exception rather than the rule now, even with the modified vehicles.
-
I'd say not.
I get waived at all the time, granted not by any new 4x4's especially LR's but the old ones yes.
I get a waive every morning from a 90.
I think it's great, and the wife often say's "do you know that person?" Which I say "no". "So why waive" she say's? "Because there're driving a Landie" :D
-
I waive 4x4's all the time regardless. Not had a waive back yet :( but I will soldier on.
-
You keep at it Barry, one day someone will waive back even if his lights are flashing blue
-
No way, not in Yorkshire or anywhere. Just went Scandinavia and over there you get headlamps windows down orgasmically enthusiastic (is that a word) waves, it way cool. I don't wave to freelanders/discos/RR's cos most of them aren't enthusiasts but i wave back if they do, but series and defender drivers always wave/flash usually before i do in this country (apart from the odd grumpy arsed farmer). It winds up folk who are in the truck with me no end. One lass who was riding with me summed it up, she said it was like being in a huge family. (She is after a Disco now, HE, HE)

Its cos tha's a Yorkshireman, folk don't come more friendly than us. Gods own county.
-
Series motors and 90's wave round here - they even wave when I flash the lights and wave from the coach :D
-
We have just bought a 90 which my lad drives mainly. He noticed within a few days that 'strange men' waived at him for no apparent reason except they were driving a Land Rover . . . . . . .
Difficult to explain when I spent years warning him of strange men being friendly for no reason as he was growing up
It is a god thing though, and he waives back now.....
-

I agree with that as gave a lass a lift home from work last week and she was baffled as to why this guy in a series was waiving and I wavied back.
she asked if I knew them and just said no its just what landy drivers do.
But I think its just not as comon as once was

HWMBO drives a disco and he'll wave at anybody
Do two fingered waves count :?: :? :?:
Me?? By the time I've realised why somebody's been waving they're
half a mile away!! But you shouldn't let those, who forget or refuse
to wave back, stop you...
:(biggrin): :(biggrin):
-
I get waived at all the time when I'm driving my sIII, mainly by other series or 90 owners. Having a bright orange Disco helps so I do get a lot of waives in that too, SWMBO has gotten used to it now and has stopped asking the "who was that" question.
-
Discos don't wave and defenders don't waive to me 'cos I'm driving a disco. I thought the giant splat on the bonnet would help but no  I assume that you series and defender drivers would flash back though if I initiated it though
-
in the defense of series drivers they're usually too busy holding the doors shut, keeping it in gear, compensating for the vauge steering and wondering what's about to fall off to wave :)
nobody else has an excuse though :(
-
It's not just Land Rovers either. When we had the Porsche 944 we always used to flash other (older) porsches. Though never flashed the boxsters and new ones. There's an assumption that drivers of the very expensive models are not enthusiasts and wouldn't be interested in being part of a driving community (waving to us little people). Probably a valid assumption in most cases :(
-
Discos don't wave
Ahem.
We wave at anything that has the slightest hint of modification, from snorkel to sticker. Sometimes we get a wave back, others just a blank 'who the hell are you' look. Standard cars just don't bother in our experience
-
got to say my dad has a td5 110 and he is alllwaysgetting pplto wave to him when he is out with me in the disco no one will wave back
-
We always wave, and generally we get a wave back
Reckon it helps having 2 lunatic boys in the back though
-
Does the one-fingered wave count? I seem to get a lot of those
-
I always wave at other Series motors and 90/110s. The Series drivers always wave back and more often than not, the others will aswell
I used to wave to RR & Discos but it seemed to be that unless the vehicle was modified they wouln't bother to wave :(
Now I just tend to acknowledge modified Discos and RRs in the belief that the drivers are more enthusiatic about the LR community.

So that's what a snorkel is for

I have a Jeep, so no one waves at me :( Not even the other Grand Cherokee's that I see about.

Well,
My Disco is pretty standard, you wouldn't see many stickers on it from the front but I'll wave at most things LR, and I shall be very very offended if any of you ignore me just coz I'm in a standard looking vehicle.
Look out for my Number Plate, It's quite easy to spot.
-
It seems to be dying off.
I keep waving and when it's not reciprocated I keep saying that's the last time I give a wave. Then along comes another LR and guess what I wave.

-
I'm always waving, and when the mrs is in the car she always says whos that?, my normal reply is I don't know
Keep waving guys :D
-
My wife and daughter thought I was mad when I first bought my 90.
Used to get waved at a lot.
Now in the Disco  nothing.
Too many life style drivers, not enough enthusiasts
-
Just got a wave off a nice young lady in a new D3.
Gobsmacked. I nearly forgot to wave back. I really wasn't expecting it. Newer Landies seem to ignore you. Especially the ones with the PSX fitted sa standard :)
Ed
-
Similar thing with Jeeps so don't think you're alone
Normally get a wave from off road prepped landies it must be said

its a snobbery thing with unmodded Discos most of em drive with nose in air -god knows why there s not much status to a 10 yr old landy, series peeps are more down to earth type s allmost all wave , newDefenders well most of em are yuppies(remember them) they buy their MUD from salis bury plain and are not about to wave at some one who uses their landy for what it was intended for , probably out of embaressment. me! im a jeepster i will wave at anyone who s haveing a go.
-
When i drive my 300 Tdi no one waves
When i'm in Big Blue i get waved at!
Funny how it works eh!
:D
-
well waved at 2 90's today. What did I get back?
Confused looks
Mind you they where both less than 3 years old
-
Hi, i got waved at by a disco passing me outside work as i was getting into my truck, hjad a ***mud nuber plate onit but don't know who you are hello anyway & bet your a brumie to ?, i always wave at lr but only get one back if it's old or modded, never been waved at in swmbo's disco2,
thanks john.
-
I normally find that it is series or 90/100 drivers that wave, don't know what it is about some disco drivers but they don't normally bother even if i wave first.
-
I get regular waves from Disco's, Defenders, Rangies and generally most Series models too......Never been waved at by a S3
I think its great :D .....We only wave at each other for simpathy
-
Next time i see you then steve i will waive then.

S3..........She was after you ED, not the Landy

I get occasional waves, from Defenders mostly, now I have the snorkel on the Discovery. (The roofrack means you could be a commercial user, but the snorkel seems to give credibility as an off-roader.)
In Iceland we waved at all the other Land Rovers, but only the non-Icelandic ones ever waved back. (Icelanders aren't the most emotionally demonstrative of people :) )
In the 101 you usually get looks of blind panic from the oncoming traffic - the drivers are too busy trying to get out of the way to wave
-
Equally, by the way, I tend to wave at Defenders, but not so much at Discoveries, because Discovery drivers tend just to look puzzled. Again, the exception is usually Discoveries with snorkels.
-
I don't think the wave is becoming anything less. However I've only being driving our 90 full time for the past 6 months. Since then I've carefully been cultivating a small group of wavers. I'm quite proud that I've now got several surly farmers who wave every day. (I'm still working on the industrial crew and the local army boys). Tomorrow I'm picking up my Disco so I'll have to see what reaction I get then.
-
Next time i see you then steve i will waive then.
Not if I'm following you
-
I seem to get plenty of waves. I dont usualy waive to non modded disco's though as they dont seem to get it. Nearly all series and defenders/counties waive back. I think the mods help and the fact it looks like a monster truck.
I went to the local shopping centre yesterday and got lots of stares!! One family stopped putting their shopping in the boot to gawp!
I hope waving doesnt die out as it has been much of the expierience for a very long time. I got more waives 10 years ago in my v8 series 3 though.....wonder where she is now???

-
having just come back from the french alps waving at other landrovers happens over there too, as well as people standing and looking at our disco's (mine and arightpest and all the other people that was there)
-
Even although I have a DS2 with snorkel and lots of stickers I wave at other landies- series, 90/110 etc etc and get a very limited response especially round east lothain edinburgh way but when Im down south you seem to have more of a chnace of being waved at.
just my 2penneth worth.
Dave

I was out with a group today, 2 x Land Rover and 6 x Shogun/Pajero. I did spot an oncoming Shogun driver wave. maybe it isnt just a Land Rover thing.....
-
After getting my first wave and re-assuring "nod" from an on-coming Disco driver the day I bought mine, I started waving.
That was 4 years ago. Locally, not many replies, however recently things are looking up. I get a few waves, a couple of nods, a blank stare and a number of birds.
I'm wearing them down.
-
was out green laning today (3 modified 90's) and got waved from 3 other 90's and a 110(I was the person who waved 1st). Nothing from 2 90's and a series nothing from any disco's either
-
waved at 3 times this week & it's only wed!!!,
doing well or what ?
john.
-

I know what you mean :) In Tazman's Disco we wave at all Land Rovers (old, modified ones I mean). But now I drive a Jeep (not a Freelander) - a big fat zero wave
-
Must say round here I rarely get a wave off a newer Grand or KJ Cherry
Wranglers n XJ Cherry's no problem ditto sorted Landys :D
-
Was waved at by nice shiny mod'ed 110 today in newcastle. Unfortunatly was on a roundabout at the time so couldnt wave back
:(
-
I Drive my reasonbly modded 90 300tdi and always waive at other defenders , series and the odd disco if it is modded. I find the further north i go the less people wave back but i carry on waiving and flashing the lights regardless, my mates always ask "who was that" they now understand that "its a landy thing" keep waiving after all it is a landy thing!!!!!
-
i always wave to series / 90 / 110 / defender and also modded disco's and rangies.
most of the time i get a wave / flash of lights back apart from util / famers.
-
As another Jeep owner, I can say that it's not just a Landie thing. I always wave at wrangler drivers and any other 'mod'ed' Jeeps along with Mod'ed Landies and other 4X4's
Most times I get a wave back.
I've given up waving to other Cherries and Grand Cherries though. You tend to just get a blank stare! (lifestyle drivers just like newer discos and RR's)
-
well, ive been in Kephalonia for last two weeks, so catching up on threads, the wave is still alive up here, my 4yr old thiks its great and always waves .
-
hi,claire here, nigel's other half.We wave at everything and everyone, either in Nelly or the Disco(Brunhilda).
We also wave at English bull terriers and other cool dogs
Some people are born miserable though.
At least thoses of us that do wave can be bothered,eh?!?Claire
