We have a problem with the V8.
It all centers around the starter motor and heat.
When running on petrol, if we are stationary for about 5 mins then she just will not restart if the engine is switched off until she cools down for 10 mins or so (sounds like a flat battery but it is actualy the starter motor electric getting cooked).
If we have been running on LPG then we dont even have to be sat stationary. Stop, switch engine off and she will not restart for a good 30 mins. We always start her on petrol and we always do the last half mile on petrol before stoping.
The only thing I can figure is that the exhust pipes are somehow running hotter on LPG than on petrol and I havnt got a clue what to do about it or even if this is normal.
We have order a new (and smaller) starter motor and, when fitted, we will put some heat shielding around it. But I am concerned that the engine is running hotter on LPG (or something else is wrong)
Any ideas?

Is it a standard V8 set up ??
Standard exhausts etc, cos we dont have any problems like that, although i did discover turning the engine off on a steep side slope was a stupid idea, it wouldnt restart on LPG....

I have similar issues in the 90 if I'm towing the exhibition unit... When the engine works hard, the exhaust temperature soars. If the engine stops you have to wait for the solenoid to cool down to be able to start again.
I've got it all in pieces at the moment doing some jobs, so some heat insulation is going in at the same time.

Yes running LPG will be slightly hotter than on petrol, but not enough that would cause a problem like this.
I have been running on LPG for 5 years now on my 3.9 and apart from the initial problems with a rubbish installation all has been fine.
Out of interest are you losing water, but not sure where it is going ?
What LPG kit do you have ?

It is a RR 3.5L efi unit

Havnt got a clue what the unit is :oops:
The only other thing I can see which might be an issue although I cant see how it would be related is that there is a kink in one of the air hoses on the efi unit (replaced wrong when the wing was changed) This will obviously strangle the engine of some air. I will get that sorted today.

it will be the timing if it is running hot set it properly and it will be fine
