Just, wondered whether or not you are able to fit any sort of upgraded air filter - to replace the oil bath one fitted to a standard 2 1/4 diesel :?:
-
you can get a K&N filter for them, but the ultimate question has to be "why bother ?" since the 2.25 diseasil isn't exactly a performance engine at the best of times I wouldn't have thought you'd notice the new filter...
-
Good call. Saying that i've got it up 70 before, it has got some kick for a diesel engine, does a K+N filter improve performance, engine running and fuel eco?
-
i've got it up 70 before
Was that going downhill with a following wind or on a recovery trailer?
-
Maybe a air filter box from a 90 or 110 will make for quick easy & clean filter changes, plus easyer to seal up if fitting a snorkle :?:
-
Fitting a K&N should give you a couple of horse power. Replacing the mechanical fan with an electric one gives you 5hp extra though! (on my 2.25 petrol, tried it on a rolling road) Plus the engine heats up quicker and its quieter (not sure you'd notice this on the diesel though!)
Mine has a electric fan from a Rover 600 (cost me £12.50 new, bought it at a kit car show) thats fits quite well.
-
Replaced the old mechanical fan with a kenlowe, best investment i have ever made! if you have a standard speedo, and your running on 750s does that mean it will be under reading your speed or over reading?
-
With 750's its means your actually going faster than your speedo indicates - for example speedo = 45mph, actual speed = 50 mph.
-
fit an green cotton tornado or a k&n the make a lotof difference i have a series 3 with the 2286 diesel engine it will improve the off the mark throttle response
the green cotton is about £85 (this is the one i have and it comes with a shroud so that it wont get oilly) and the k&N is about £30
you'll need one with a 68mm diameter female hole on it and the green cotton you'll need the 70mm and a 90 bend
hope this helps

Excellant, will consider a conversion now. by the way speedo was reading 70mph so was actually going faster then and it seemed like she had more to give! I reckon the diesel engine is wonderful... when it runs right

Personally i wouldn't bother trying to improve the performance of the 2.25 diesel, as i have tried everything. ie: the pump, removing the fan, paper air filter, ported and skimmed head, matching the exhaust manifold to the head as half of the no.4 exaust port is actually covered by the manifold, tried all host of other things and it was stil s**t slow. put the money towards a 200tdi, what a difference one of those makes.
Still have a ported haed for a 2.25 diesel if you are dead set on the 2.25 route.
-
i run a K&N on mine (supposed to be for a 2.8 nissan diesel)
i didnt notice the difference at all from the standard oil bath, apart from making it a tad noisier
but as it was free, and my oil bath was leaking (dont ask!) i left it on

I have had 85mph out of my S3 Diesel but there is a catch. I have fit 90 diffs and the speedo has been changed to a 90. I haD a person following me as I did it to check that my speedo was correct. It did take about 4 mins to get there and it was on the flat.
This is the catch...
1 I WILL NOT DO IT AGAIN AS I COULD NOT KEEP THE D*M THING IN THE WHITE LINES.
2 BOTH DIFF SEALS LEAKED AFTER THIS.
3 THE EXHAUST CAME LOSE.
4 THE SIDE SKIRT STARTED TO FLAP.

I thought the vehicle behind you was to pick up the bits as well as checking your speed

There is no way to tell how fast a land rover is traveling unless you have got a GPS unit on board, Spedo's read a random speed depending on many factors, like time of day, weather conditions, Wife on board or not, etc
I have had my S2 over 80 down hill, brother behind in 90 TD5 S**ting himself at the thought.
As for tyre size on 7.50's and 265/75's get the same speed from GPS at 50 on clock.
-
Series motors at speed...
I got the 90 2.5NA up to a ton once, and was partially expecting a scotsman to poke his head out of the boot and scream "she cannae take it anymooor cap'n"
Wings were flapping, doors were flapping, the roof was about to come off, don't think they're built for speed to be honest.

Not quite true. If the 88-inch Land Rover has been fitted with a Long Wheel Base speedo, from a 109-inch, and the 88-inch has 7.50s fitted, it will read correctly, because it is calibrated for the tyre diameter.
Rover had it as an option during the Series 2/2A production, to have 7.50s fitted, and therefore the 109-inch speedo would also be fitted. The only way to tell if you have a 109 speedo is by doing a speed check.
I think my 2A has a 109 speedo fitted at the moment, as the speedo seems to be under-reading on 205/80 tyres. Although I will be fitting larger tyres ASAP.
Personally, I've never heard of anyone managing to get their 2.25 Diesel to go decently quick. They're usually said to be, slow, noisey, and smelly, and not as reliable as the petrol engine. Economy isn't always that brilliant either with standard setup on the transmission.
I have been in a Series 3 88-inch CSW, while a friend had been following in his 88-inch van. The CSW had a 2.25 Petrol under the bonnet, where as the van sided 88-inch had a 2.25 Diesel under the bonnet... and half the time we kept leaving the diesel behind.

well lets just say if its doing 75mph no problem with Banditman and Smason behind me then its obviously going to be topping 85mph after 10mins of full throttle. It does go believe me. But you are right the speedos are unconsistant. Just PM banditman ask him how fast Minimans Landy is.
