Title: Aux Socket
Post by: Mace on September 02, 2005, 12:54:28
Can anyone tell me what amp cable I need to run an extention off the ciggy lighter to the back of the boot area?

And where's the best place to run the feed from at the front?

And does it need a separate fuse and what rating?

It's just for general use and for nothing in particular.

Ta very much.

P.S I want it to be permenant live !

There should be a terminal bolt through the bulkhead you can connect a fairly heavy cable to for this purpose.  Fit an inline fuse and use cable of at least 20 amps, you never know how much you'll come to rely on it!

I think I've seen Cigarette lighter sockets (with a little flap) in the boot of Discovery 2's, if I'm right then one from a scrap yard might prove an easy way of installing it (possibly the trim etc is interchangeable).

Can anyone confirm / deny this?

On my disco the "front"/original cigar lighter is switched with the key. I am also planning a "coolbox" socket in the rear, but waiting till I finish deciding what other cables I want to run to the backend first ;)

I have two one in the passenger seating area and one in the boot, both wired directly to the second battery with 20amp fuses inline.

I've seen a couple of nice Freelander sockets on ebay which should be OK with other vehicles.

I've bought myself several metres of 27a cable, and inline fuse holder, 20a fuse and a socket or two to fit where I want.

Do I need to secondary fuse the cig sockets to a lower ampage to protect the system or will the single 20amp do the job?

Can i wire the cable directly to my one and only battery to create a completely new AUX circuit?
I thought I'd use a switch on the dash to isolate the whole circuit, so I assume the switch needs to be rated at 20 amps too?
Would a distribution box be a better long term plan?
What is the standard current draw on a cig socket?

Questions, questions, questions.....many thanks for all your help

If you run 10amp cable from a circuti fused at 20 amp you should fit another fuse, or theoretically the wire will burn out long before the fuse goes.

You can buy cig lighters from places like Halfrauds for about £6 or multi socket outlets without a lighter for about £10 from Towsure etc.  I've got one under the dash: CB, Phone, Tyre pump, coolbox etc etc.

I put a socket into the back of mine by tapping it into the split charge wire on the towing electrics. It only works with the ignition on but I've ahd it a long time now with no problems and it's exeptionally easy to fit.
