Post by: turtle on September 04, 2005, 22:49:51
Slowly stripping a series 2a just a few more bits to get off like the steering arms  :? I haven't got a ball joint seperator, any ideas what I could use instead?

Or should I go out and buy the proper tool?

Proper tool would be good.
I also find a pri-bar pulling the track rod the way you want it to got and a good thump or two from a lump hammer the side of where the balljoint goes onto works well, saves damaging the seal on the balljoint if you're using it again!!

Usually finish up leaning on the joint with a bar, after slacking the nut off, but not removing it, and soaking it in penetrant first.

Then whacking it with a hammer on the side of the joint, not always successful, but nine times out of ten, success

I've never used a ball joit splitter (on a Land Rover) - usually just crack them off with a couple of sharp blows with a hammer on the housing that you want the TRE to be relased from.
