Since the 2nd birthday bash I have been subjected to a really annoying noise coming from the rear of the car.
It sounds like a heat shield (or summat similar) rattling, and happens whenever the rear axle goes over a bump in the road. However, I have been under the car bashing various bits and pieces, all to no avail.
Anyone got any ideas, apart from coating the whole lot in mud again so nothing rattles under there
Any ideas would be most appreciated

Thin disc shield maybe?
Rusted away.
Or maybe one of the rear splash panels under the back of the arches

It wasn't me!!!!
-
Is it your rear diff guard, if you have one? I had a Southdown one which rattled like a bag of spanners, and eventually fell off, several times. (I now have a nicely-fitting QT Services one...)

Maybe you should let her sit up front

Does it only happen as you go over the bump, or does it carry on for a bit afterwards?
-
Baffle come loose in an exhaust box possibly?
-
I just read (somewhere!?) that the mud guard on the diff can come loose and rattle. If I find the web site again I'll post a link as it had a handy picture showing the offending item
found it ... here's a picture http://www.difflock.com/servicing/tdi-6k-service/Drive-Flange-Mudshield.jpg
It's on this page http://www.difflock.com/servicing/tdi-6k-service/tdi-6k-1.shtml

Both disc shields removed, so can't be them.
Is it your rear diff guard
No, nice QT one as well, with all the bolts nice and tight.

Haven't got a centre box anymore, and the rear one doesn't seem to make any noise when I thump it.
Does it only happen as you go over the bump, or does it carry on for a bit afterwards
Only as the axle hits the bump.
Thanks for the replies chaps. Will be out there again this evening checking splash panels as suggested and thumping other bits that may look like they could work their way loose

Simon,
What about the exhaust downpipe flexi joint - is it rattling and the noise is being transmitted down the pipe towards the back end ??
Jim

Jim, no problem with the downpipe since you sold me the replacement
-
Have you looked around the body panels to see if they have rusted away somewhere, if you have mud flaps they are swines for attracting rust
Another thought might be the shock absorber outer shields
-
shock absorber mount?
-
Exhaust coming into contact with the chassis / body ?
The tractor engine ?
Oh, you said back not front... sorry :-)
-
Try checking the brake lines etc - they may have moved / bent slightly, enough so that when the axle bangs over a hump, they knock against the casing ...
-
Brakes pads try going over some rough ground with the brakes on slightly if this stops the rattle its most likely the pads moving in the caliper.
Cause retainer loose or missing, or caliper pistons seized.
-
check the front shock bottom bushes as they are really common for goin & letting the shock moove n clunk about, also need a 15 ton press to remove them

I've got this problem on mine. The 'knocking' is noticeable, but definitely comes from the front axle, so I doubt that this is what's annoying Simon so much ...
Lift kit & new shocks is next on my shopping list, which should fix the knocking permanently!!
-
That's a nice motor you have spooky, can't wait to see it lifted and the big tyres you plan on fitting.
What size are you going for by the way?
-
Nothing too rediculous, Tony - 265/75-16 MTs ...
-
Well, it's not the exhaust hitting anything, there doesn't seem to be a mud shield on the rear diff and the brake lines seem okay.
However, I did notice that the bottom of the rear 1/4 panel no the nearside was a little distorted (don't know how that happened  ) and when it was knocked it touched a panel behind it. The offside didn't do this.
Only prob is that I didn't have time to test it out, before I'd finished a rather large JD & coke. Will report tomorrow.
Oh, and Tim, it's not the engine, 'cos that's new and rattles in a completely different way
-
If it's more of a knock than a rattle, it could be the rear A frame ball joint.

He hasn't got one of them ;-)
-
doesnt have a rear a frame, has a watts linkage & replaced all the bushes on 1 before & the bill just for parts was over £200,what about the ARB d bushes
-
I knew that.... ....well it should have, then we wouldn't all be in this mess :?
-
HA....THAT'S WOT I THOUGHT! :(
TIME TO ATTACK THE A-FRAME BUSHES/ BALL JOINT THEN??????

TIME TO ATTACK THE A-FRAME BUSHES/ BALL JOINT THEN?????? Rolling Eyes
A disco 2 doesnt have an A frame on the rear,it has a watts linkage ala Gp4 Mk2 s'cort & init it contain 2 bearings & 3 alloy/rubber bushes which are a runt to change & a fortune to buy,see my other post ,so far have yet to see one wear the linkages to cause a knocking noise, more likely the ARB D bushes thats causing the knock, took 1 day to find the first set away on a car then 5 min there after
