Did anyone see the Channel 5 programme last night about 'the 10 greatest helicopters' ?
The showed footage of a Chinook performing a water extraction.... it flies in over a lake, opens the cargo door, hovers over the lake with the bottom half of the fuselage *under water*... the green beret rib then comes along and sails right into the back of the chinook which promplty lifts it's door and lifts off.... boat, water and all !!
What with that and the search & rescue team who winched out of a Sea King from 100' up, down to a man standing on a mountainside holding a wine glass. The winchman drops in beside him, and pours a glass of champage ! Quite some party piece.
Incredible piloting, fantastic machines.

Saw about 5 minutes of the programme before I had to go out, wished I put a tape in now :(
-
Sounds very interesting, Wonder if it will be repeated ?
-
Agree entirely would love to learn to fly one and own one, but they cost even more then Landies!! Used to service them and have flown in plenty(Ex RAF) awesome!!

Sounds a bit like a Defender wading
-
Like I said before, Chinook, the ultimate recovery off road recovery vehicle
I had to learn winching from helicopters back in the 70s/80s, along with absailing down from them, great fun, definately opens the eyes
-
It was a very God program! glad to see the Huey win at no 1 But my favourite has always been the Gazelle! 8)

Chinook is blatenly the best helicopter, saw a display at kemble air day and was unbeliveable. I was lucky enough to go inside one at fairford with the ATC and one day hopefully want to be a loadmaster on one, with a swinging Land Rover 110 hanging below!

My fav helicopters are:
1) Huey HU-1B
2) Chinook
3) CH-53 Super Stallion
4) V22-Osprey (well its allmost a helicopter)
5) Sea King
6) Mi-24 Hind
7) MK8 Lynx
Just so you know

Was just looking for pics to go with the above article, and found this.
-
In no particular order:
Gazelle
Hughes 500
Lynx 9
Bell 47
Comanche
Mi-26
And of course, my Nexus 30. :D
-
Oh, and this is what an Mi-26 can do with a CH-47
-
Must say I'm a fan of the Chinook, and the Lynx is a nice bit of kit too.
On pure "big boys toys" ratings, this has to score quite high too :
-
I hope the cameraman ducked! :D

Speaking of such things... what was quite an eye-opener was the absolute trust they have to put in each other... There was a bit of footage of a Chniook collecting a big lump of somehing from the ground... it hoverd in and then descended down above the cargo... 2 blokes were standing on top of it with the loading straps, ready to hook on...
I can just imagine the first time you do that.... stood on top of a big pallet and stuffing great twin-rotor helicopter swoops down above your head, stopping just in time for you to reach up and casually hook on a strap !
-
Not just each other, but their machinery also. (Mull of Kintyre springs to mind)
-
well if we are talking big boys toys
heres the Mi-12
-
I saw that programme too
Very good
I was following 2 Apachie's the other week on the A303 (near Salisbury Plain)
They were hovering sideways above the carrigeway
Bad pic but you can make 1 out
Above pic is blown up from the bottom one.
-
well, just to utterly utterly show off....
This picture, whilst not being all that wonderfull is of "Ninety" when he was getting his commercial pilots licence...
(smug glowing feelings for having a smarty pants in the family)
-
The R22 was about 3rd in the top 10 due to being so "affordable".. a snip at $185,000
That said, the sales figures for them were quite impressive.
-
That bits great fun, Although the pilot was having a laugh when he tried to see how low I could fold myself.
Chinook is big from underneath, and you can't push it up even when you try.
Although nothing beats riding the ramp while it's grass cutting!!! :(bigwicked): :(biggrin): :(bigsmile):
This is the best helicopter ever, and it's british!!!!

We have Apachies and cobras on manouvers out on the Plain, i was driving at 70mph on a gravel track last week with an Apachie in full combat kit shadowing me - i felt like a fugitive i was only going back to hq for a spot of lunch, awesome!

now whistling the tune. That's going to annoy work tomorrow.
-
I'm now wondering if there are boy racer heli-mags selling body kits to slap on your R22 or Jet Ranger :-)
I can just picture it now... comes into land with the ICE pounding and turns on his blue neons whilst trying to make sure his 'Airwolf replica body kit' stays attached.
-
flying chavs.....
If their anything like the novas, it's doesn't dare thinking about.
-
Bluethunder Vs Airwolf.............
Bluethunder wins everytime!

T.H.O.R
Come on chaps, what did it stand for :D

I can't believe I know this... makes me almost as much a geek as you...
Tactical Helicopter Offensive Response
-
yeah, but can you tell 60 seconds with your eyes shut ?
-
<chuckle>
I can... but I occasionally hit the cones on the way out of the garage..
This is getting sad now.... 8)
