Title: getting hot
Post by: Jake on September 15, 2005, 17:54:23
My 3.5 V8i is geeting too hot recently.
The twin fans on the front.
Do they work from a thermostat?
Where is the thermostat located?
Or is it worth wiring the twins up on a switch?

Have you hosed out the fins on the rad lately?
Mine regularily get clogged with mud.

Yes
I gave it a good cleaning a couple of weeks ago
The main part is its not getting cooled
Any thoughts on the front fans?

Are the fans new?
Could they have the blades on the wrong way and pushing when they should be pulling or vice versa?

Have the fins gone walkies? Most people find them on the floor when they've just used a jet wash on them :)

Thermostat working?

The twin fans on the air-con condenser are wired to come on if:
a) the Air-Con is running, or
b) the engine exceeds a certain temperature (95 celcius I believe).
The thermostat itself is on the water outlet elbow at the front of the inlet manifold - these unfortunately have a tendancy to go Breasts Uppermost ...

I'd start by checking that there isn't a huge clod of muck between the condenser and the rad, then test the main engine thermostat in the usual manner ...

If you wish to override the fan thermostat, simply wire a switch in parallel with it (but NOT an illuminated type of switch, as these short to ground when switched off! ). The fans will then be energised by the exisiting relay.

Incidentally, I had a Classic Rangie about a decade ago, on which the condenser fans didn't work.  This was because a previous owner had unplugged the connectors behind the grille! :!:
