Post by: LandRoger on September 21, 2005, 17:15:06
All you peeps that run V8s  rr or Disco s  , what is a realistic figure for this engine , both on a run and when laning ? what is the best setup for  economy -carbs or efi ?  which is the best to go for 3.5 3.9 or other ,

I usually get around 18mpg from my V8 110. On a bad day, it might get down to 14mpg. It's an early one running Strombergs.

V8 3.5 efi RR was doing 21 mpg

V8 hybrid 3.5 with carbs was doing about 11 but it had roll cage, winches etc and serious tyres that weighed it down.....

Knowing what I know.....  14 on the racer is VERY generous.

2 mpg is far more likely

Early V8 110 on stromberg carbs (and 4spd box)

Around 14mpg on LPG, will do better on petrol but cant afford to find out exactly  :P

Glad somebody started this, I was thinking along the same lines.

Just swapped the Disco Tdi for a 3.9 V8 EFi Auto (1996, 80k miles FSH), great motor, but the first time I checked it

14 mpg

Admittedly had only done just over 100 miles and at least 50% local running around but.........    can this get a bit better, my old RRC used to be capable of around 18 - 19 on a decent run  :(

My 90CSW-V8 did about 15mpg on LPG

Unless it had the BWSOW we had then hitched up. It once returned about 7mpg in the Lake District

At that time the only LPG outlet I knew of was in Penrith & we were at Castlerigg Caravan Site (http://www.castlerigg.co.uk/), so it was fairly close

also on my 90 if you stoke the fire to around the top of the 5k mark you can get the fuel guage to go downs as the revs go up  :(biglaugh):

DUCK returns @340 miles to a full load of LPG(a full load is 120 litres),thats about 13 miles to the gallon.we only know two speeds though,70 mph and parked.
DIESEL returns @24 miles to the gallon on road and @8 miles to the gallon green laning, less is easily acheivable with help from my size twelves or a sunken disco

~ 13 mpg around town & blasting country lanes ( faster than Impreza since can see over hedges ;) )
~ 18 mpg on motorways rise slightly ~ 19 if keep speed below 80 on cruise dropping to 70 doesn't give any benefit... (tried it once & didn't like it   )

Tyre choice can have a huge effect on mpg. Mine is a 3.5 Efi, does 19 mpg on 235/85R16 Marshall MTs, but when I put the 265/75R16 Bronco Dirt Devils on it drops to 14mpg. And I can only do 55mph on the Broncos as they vibrate so much, but 70 mph comfortably on the Marshalls.

Obviously a lot of rolling resistance with the knobblies - like riding a racing bicycle with large smooth tyres compared to moutain bike knobblies - it's easy to see which takes less effort for a certain speed :)

When we were noise testing the Discos at work on driveby track or rolling road, Land Rover gave us a set of wheels with Disco sized slicks to run on, otherwise the tyre noise drowned out the exhaust noise
