Where the hell is it?? I can see the one on the main box but cant for the life of me find the one on the transfer box.
It is not filled from the main box is it??
AND
What is the correct type of oil in there. It looks like auto box oil in the main box, or at least it is very red and not lke the hypoid 80/90 type of oil
-
On the back of the transfer box, about halfway up... just in line with the edge of the handbrake drum.
It's a 1/2" square drive.
The transfer box oil is EP80/90 unless the box has been changed for something non-standard.
-
BTW.. The gearbox is ATF.. you can change this for MTF if you prefer.
-
Just here
-
Thanks guys, as ever, invaluable :)
There is so much crap around there I must have missed it. I think I was looking a little higher to be honest.
Is the oil in the main box the red stuff like autobox oil?? It seemed to be when I dipped it with my finger to check the level
-
This assumes one of the 5 speed boxes. The LT95 uses engine oil (15W/40) in the main box and transfer box if I remember correctly.
-
the LT 85 & 95 both use engine oil for lubrication but all Tboxes apart from the borgwarner use EP90/80
-
now then, just when I thought I knew what I was going to do, it gets more complex.
How do I tell hat type of box it is?? All I know is that it has a 5 speed main box.........
:?
-
What engine is in there ?
-
R380- with an LT230 Transfer box.....
Doh....not the Disco .. fool Neil!
Well...unless is is a 3.5 V8 .. it's not going to have an LT95 .. so it's possibly an LT77 with an LT230 on the back.....he says, as the others are 4 speed. Oh it might be an LT85 .. but er .... possibly not if it is a diesel.
-
Yeah...
Probably worth finding out what the engine is then ;-)
-
Ill try n list First G box then T box
if its a tdi & reverse is forward its an LT77 & LT230
if its a tdi & reverse is backwards its a R380 & LT230
If its a V8 same applies above for the discoverys & defenders
If its a 90 or 110 factory V8 im 99.9999% sure it will be a LT85 santana split case which takes engine oil
if its a rangie classic & has only a High or Low lever it has a borgwarner T box & that takes ATF for lubrication, all othet Tboxs take EP80 or 90
-
it is a diesel 90...... :)
a 2.5 N/A one at that on a '85 B plate

It should be LT77 gearbox and LT230 If its not been played with
Reverse is top left (next to 1st)

What about dipping the box through the filler if there is enough oil in it to see whether its thick and gooey or thin and slightly reddish if you are lucky, or a quick loosen off of the drain plug to leak a bit out there?
-
erm , yes I can do that, now that I know where the filler is :)
I was just surprised to see the red auto oil in the main box when I dipped that one...... I was expecting 80/90 oil...... and just wanting to check it was correct
-
I think I right in that the LT77 & R380 use the ATF because they have a built-in pump that takes the fluid to the top of the box.
EP80/90 is too thick for the pump to cope with and if this is use in the box then you may get a large repair bill before too long.

Me too
When I got the disco I thought i was going nuts, having always worked with series vehicles, it was a worrying sight, mind mine came out nearly black though.
Was well overdue for a change I reckon
-
Done it.... Auto fluid in the main box and 80/90 in the Transfer box..... and both boxes were full and quite clean oil too, nice :)
-
Well done that man. =D>
Have fun getting the new oil in the filler holes did we?
I use a £2.99 Draper Tools syphon pump, it'll just cope with the EP90 and is much easier than having to keep filling a 500ml bottle. :D
-
Thankfuly it was only the rear diff that needed topping up :) but i know what you mean about the filler tube....
i have an air bottle thingy which will probably do, should I ever need to top them up....... This can be filed with whatever fluid and delivered more easily, or at least I think it can!!! i am sure if i am wrong, someone on here will let me know
Thanks again for all your help
