Title: Canary under bonnet
Post by: Kenny on October 02, 2005, 12:46:03
Strange one this. Recently when driving the 90 I put my foot on the accelerator and get a loud which I can only describe as a canary sound coming from the car. Sometimes it does not happen at all and never happens when stationaru. If I ease of the accelerator the sound fades and dies totally. Foot back just a touch and it's straight back.

I cannot see where it is coming from and am getting really frustated with the noise.

Any thoughts what could be causing this ?

I would be checking all the rubber pipes from the turbo to the inlet manifold to make sure they are tight and one of them doesn't have a hole in it.

You will only get the noise when driving cos' the engine is under load so the turbo will be working.

On the Pajero, it's usually the exhaust manifold leaking due to the turbo boost....  Look for telltale soot signs round the manifold. Can also be on the inlet side too...

Easiest way to tell if it's related to the turbo On a Manual (Can be done on an auto too if you are careful)

Start her from cold and drive going up the gears as soon as possible (No Boost pressure) and keep the throttle light... No Squeak....

Now drop the gears to bring the revs up and use the throttle (Create high pressure boost) and you'll hear the squeak

EE

Turbo, Turbo I hear you say - he is a 2.5 NA the only turbo he gets is the sharp kick up the backside when stuck in the mud :)

I thought about the UJ's but there is no movement there at all. Mystery to me this one. I went out with the wife earlier and I had her crawling around the cab trying to find where the sound was coming from. No Luck.

I had a pair of wrens set up a nest in my truck once.

Thankfully they didn't make any noise

similar sound I had on the Disco... turned out to be the main belt needing a change.... job done :)

I did get some belt spray from my local spares shop which quitened it down until I got round to changing it, and it proved the belt was at fault

I thought Belt, however it does not make the noise when stationary and revs are applied.

Seems to coincide with the road surface also. Slightly uneven and it occurs more.

Really, really strange this one and REALLY REALLY ANNOYING

Going too fast round corners ???

Take some WD40 with you.... drive... squeak, spray one joint.... drive squeal... spray one joint... may help you find where it's squeaking at least...

If it doesn;t do it more when cornering, then I would guess it was going to be half shafts or engine pullies....

Hmm, may have found the culprit. What do you lot think. The rear UJ on the front prop is shot. Still works but loads and loads of movement. Now could this be causing the canary ?

For now gonna shove a load of grease on it adn see what happens.

Could be your canary, metalic tickling noise is how I would describe it.
Sticking the grease in there should stop the noise but as Dave says, you still want to replace it ASAP.

Only a tweet would ask that!!  :(biglaugh):

And the less said about Andy and a canary visiting his old NAD the better I think!
