Title: Auto Conversion
Post by: dazzawhipple on October 04, 2005, 13:03:13
I am selling my Landrover 90 and intend to join the Disco brigade ............I have a question

I would like a Auto but me being tight will go for a good manual one (200tdi) as i have a RR 3.5 Efi AUTO sitting on my drive can I put the auto box onto a 200 TDI Its a 4 speed ZF

Is it a simple conversion or it just cant be done

It can be done, it's not simple but it's not mega unsimple and it won't work properly  :x

The V8 autobox will have different gear change settings compared to a diesel box, I understand it's the valves and stuff in the box that need changing - more grief than it's worth and probably cheaper in the long run just to get a 200Tdi autobox.

Unless you're going to put the V8 in as well

theres a few reasons behind this

The kids and the boss dont like the 90 to 'rough and ready' ,sounds so nice with the V8

Used to have a 300tdi auto and I do favour the auto box but..................I only intend to run the car as a second motor so It will be manual unless I can get hold of a auto for the right money...........

Then the fun begins  Snorkel, Mud, Small lift Steering guards etc

If it's just a second car, transplant the whole lot, V8 and autobox and sell the tdi engine and box.

You get some money to spend on fuel / toys and you get the Autobox and noise you want.

Everyone's a winner :-)

A plan with no drawbacks.  Put it on LPG and you'll be laughing at the pumps too :D

TDis command good money S/H so you'll be quids in hopefully.

Good luck 8)

Your best bet is just to forget the Tdi route and look for a nice 3.9 auto.  V8s are definitely the way to buy Discoverys at the moment if you can put up with fuelling them!

Lots of nice V8 Autos about for good money!

Thats for sure!!  I looked at several V8 autos and the difference in price to the TDis was amazing!!! I could of got the same disco for £1000 cheaper if it had been V8 and that would of funded a gas kit.  Om hind sight I may have gone V8.....  :?
