Title: I really SHOULD take my cam out more often!
Post by: xmob on October 07, 2005, 20:28:00
Had a lovely photo opportunity this evening, but didn't have my camera with me.

Parked outside the local ATC were two of the British Armed Forces Rally Team (http://www.armedforcesrallyteam.co.uk/) 90s.  It just so happens that the Trackrod Rally is going to be in Langdale Forest this weekend, and checking the BAFRT website, they are competing.  Might just have to take a wander up there, with a camera.

hope they're on better form than when I saw 'em last
Pirelli stage at Gateshead-was  a bit of  a shambles once the mini snapped an arm and halted stage
still I told the boy 'bout the army lads and about the din of them v8's

they turn up  and stone me they were diesels
pretty slow, plenty black stuff and if my memory serves me right one tipped over-bizarre

still atleast you won't need a high speed lens

myself & dad know the rally team VERY well as we spend a large amount of time recovering them from where thwy land on the brc events best so far has been 3 or 4 90's in one stage,3 of them upside down   (one in a river, one with its wheels into the trees & another sitting on its back tub with the nose in the air,if you see R1 (alan paramore) hes the man when it comes to pedling those 90's

doesn't mean they're quick-just means they need quick rack instead of a steeringbox

well ya see, they aint N/a diesels anymore, theyve got the 300tdis,pity they cant drive them very well  :lol:recovered one on the scottish after a dive down a 30ft near vertical banking, the guy was adamant that we would need a crane to get it out, well 2 winches n me driving the pund o mince shaped 90 & it came out no probs, the banking was so steep it run out o diesel 1/2 way up,when we got it out onto the road the driver claimed rather loudly that the j33p was pitching him to the left n thats why he had gone off,i had a quick scan & found nowt wrong,as it had picked air up instead of fuel was needing bledd so jumped up onto the wing n got set about bleeding it for the army guy who then commented (you'd think you spent all day working on landrovers with the speed your goin)

But the best was still to come: in his efforts to save face he started to go on about how great he was as a mechanic & driver in the army, until it was pointed out there was nothing visually wrong with the motor & he had went off on a straight bit o road  #-o

One of my ex-bosses was a driver for the Army rally team.
Steve Durban was his name.
I worked for him 8 years ago and he'd been out of the Army for a few years then.
He drove the RAC rally GB(Network Q)
Does his name ring a bell with anyone?
 :D

Now why do you think I tend to always have mine to hand??

Admittedly I left it at home one day last week & missed a '05' plated West Yorkshire Police Range Rover at the Hospital

I saw one of their 90's under a tarp on the back of a big army lorry last night, it was southbound on the M1 about 9.00pm.
I would have snapped it as I had my camera ready but it was a bit dark!
