I have read the Haynes manual on this and it seems rather complicated. Is it really that difficult.
Would appreciate some practical down to earth advice on changing the UJ.

ideally you need a vice to hold it in and to use to clamp it up and squeeze the new cups in or it gets a little difficult :lol:
you should be able to remove the circlips and push the uj across one way which will push one of the cups to the out side of the yoke,sometimes a hammer helps :D then do it the opposite way to repeat with the opposite one which should then give enough clearance to seperate it from the other yoke, repeat again with the other yoke to get the centre of the uj out then knock the cups out with a punch.
reassembly is a case of squeezing the cups in a little fitting in the uj and then squeezing together but watch you get the uj located in the cups properly or the needle rollers will cause you a problem ,good idea to smear grease all round the inside to hold them in place.
i have probably made that sound more difficult than it is :roll: just take your time with it

it looks harder than it actually is, just take your time, and make sure the rollers dont come out as said before, as if they do you could break them and thats another UJ needed! other than that, its just takes a lot of time rather than being difficult

stick the yokes in the aga for half an hour, makes the cups go in much easier

Hi Damian, If you can get them to me, i can do it for you. The only thing you have to be carefull of, is that all of the rollers stay in their place. If you get one stuck at the end, itll stop you getting it together.

I magine it would be fairly easy if I COULD GET THE DAMN PROP OFF. Think I will have to get hold of the correct tool.

use 2x 9/16 spanners

9/16 - Helps if you use the right spanner - I was using a 14mm and 15mm one.
OK Prop is now off. I have the Yoke in the vice and am using a 19mm socket and banging that. The bearing cup is not moving at all and nothing is protruding out of the other end.
Am I doing something wrong, is there a trick to this.

I always tap the cups in a little first just to loosen them from the circlips

Took me about 6 hours to replace one in our 110, not f'ing doing that again, giving it to a customer with a press next time lol

i can do joints on any vehicle in about 20-25 min now,mainly cos im doing them weekly,got a chisel made up for malkeying the yoke so it pushes out the cups,also got a few other secrets but i like to keep them for showing folk

"awrite troops,whip the B***** circlips out n fire them in the bin across the workshop,then hud the prop in the vise n get ur big floor hammer n UJ chissel to hand n then malkey it till it moves,then do the same the other way to get the cups out,
get a wee screwdriver n scrape the crud oot the bit the circlipo faws inti n gie it a dicht wi some emry,
now to pit it back the gether its just the reversal of removal,put the yoke in the hole n fit the cups lightly after removing the grease nipple,then take a 2Ib baw pein chapper n gie it a wee dunt ti put the cups in,then chap it fully down so you can fit the circlip,then flip over & do the other side"

If you have a helper, you can use the vice to press the cups out. Use the 19mm socket onto the back of one cup. On the other side, use a larger socket that the cup can drop into. Hold the prop in the vice with the two sockets either side and wind the vice to press the small socket into the cup. It will drive the UJ across until the opposing cup drops into the bigger socket....... does that make sense?...... it's difficult to explain!!
Tip - remove the grease nipple first and drive the UJ away from the side with the nipple hole. The lump where it fits reduces the travel available.
This is the way I used to do it, but now I've got a press so it's a doddle :D

Mate of mine who works on 4x4s everyday did one of mine in the field on the tailgate of a Range Rover using a small hammer and a tub of grease. he did the whole lot quicker than I could boil a kettle.
Guess it's just practice.

True, I'd not done one for 10 years plus, one hammer 2 old sockets and a pair of circlip pliers, not even got a vice just the bench.
Took me about 40 mins for the first one, the second one 20
The last one I did was a swine though, the yoke was damaged and took a lot of filing to get it clean enough to get the spider out
Just have a go, there is not a lot of damage you cando by taking them out, juts got to be careful when refitting them

Here's a thing, if the cups seem a little loose or slide in too easily, they can start to turn in the yolks and make matters worse. Try a spot of threadlock or stud'n bearing fit from Locktight to keep them in place.

i agree,doin them day n & day out ive never needed any more than a hammer & a pair of circlip pliers (an 7mm socket is handy to have aswell)hardest thing i find is getting the circlips out
