Fit a second hand gearbox today and I can here a bearing whine in 1st 2nd and 3rd but Not 4th anybody got a clue where and which bearing is the offender.
-
from the sound of it id say it was a layshaft bearing as on 4th it will prob be a straight through drive
-
Ok so it sounds like its a none expensive repair. I am thinking on overhalling my old box. I dont suppose you have or know where I can get some info off the net for a overhall.
Cheers for the Help.

not really as im not a fan of series motors, just spent ages getting one ready for its mot & the other chapped it full of holes
-
When you done that one with the bearing prob, I got one here for you to practice on
Its a common problem with them, you can run with it, it may last for ages, just dont hammer it
Best drop the oil and chack for ball bearings and other bits not made from oil in the drain, this will give you an indication if its in the early stages or later of breaking up

Rebuilt my gearbox a couple of years ago, asked AMD for advice, recomended following the Haynes book of Bull.
Did this and all ok, when i say follow Haynes i mean it, saves a lot of hassle.
If you have the Landrover workshop manual, cross refference the two, although they are nearly identical.
It is a good weekend of Fun,
1. remove spring clip - How!!!!!
This bit may take anything up to 2 hours before you get P*ssed off.
Only difficult part though, other than refitting the spring clip.
Go read haynes to find this.

and then people ask why it's commonly reffered to as the HBOL (Haynes Book Of Lies)
Check the section on replacing chassis bushes, that always makes me giggle..
