this has probably been done before but whitch one is better
i need to be able to go greenlaning and offroad but also need to carry stuff about also would be used for towing horses
about ( in a trailer )
as money is tight ish i'm look ing at a series 3
will that do what i want? :?
any ideas gratefully recived

You can get a lot more stuff in a 110/109 and i think that a long wheel base will be better for towing. The 90/88 will be better for off road but they are both very good  .
-
Put a pair of wellies in the back of a 90 and its full. Wish i had a 110 every time I camp but they're big things to green lane in.
-
get a disco!
they go for the same money as a decent S3 and are a nice compromise between lwb and swb (and much more comfortable)
if you want a really cheap one get a V8 as they go for peanuts and the fuel economy wont be much different to a 2 1/4 petrol series

Steve
I got an Disco 2.0mpi taxed and tested for £800 with only 73k on the clock, better mpg than a S3, more than likley cheaper as aell.

got a disco for SWMBO and now thats her moter!!!!
funny how she never liked it till she drove it
now i want some thing i can scratch up with no worries
am looking at seris 3 as can get one thats tax exempt and therefore cheaper on the insurance
trying to figure out if 88 or 109
am leaning to a 109 as space is allways good
but offroad will be hampered
the question is how much?

Quite a bit, you'll have a very long motor with a rubbish steering lock, no power steering and unless you fit gas shox n paras not much axle articulation.

109 has Taller tyres as standerd so better in the rutts and not quite so bouncy on the tarmac as the 88

You'll struggle to get a series 3 thats tax exempt as they started in 1971 so there is only really 2 years of production BUT you'll get loads of Series 2's and there is not alot of difference, particularly if its a Series 2a.
The little baby is great for green laning, alot of fun BUT if you have a family and you intend to travel with them and the horse gear, think again.
A 109 will give you AT LEAST 5 seats and a HUUUUGGGEE boot BUT be a dog (ish) off road.
Personally, I'd go 88
-
And in terms of price they will start at £500 and head upward to £1500 for a smart one. There are more above the price BUT if your looking to lane it, the £500 to £1000 mark will be fine
Look in local papers and ebay, avoid the Land Rover mags as they go for too much dosh in there on my opinion

SWB = 88" or 90"
LWB = 109" or 110"
Disco - 100"
Fits nicely in between, getting cheaper to buy now, suits all requirements.
Might be a good buy (but you won't get one tax exempt  )
Make your own descision - don't be forced into anything.
Come out to a Mud-Club do or look for your local GLASS meet, and go and have a proper look at a few vehicles side by side - offers of Beer can usually get you a ride or even a test drive

Not saying a word, but its good fun on the laning with mine
The other thing is with a s3 is the fact that how far do you want to go, I must admit I cheat there I trailer the lightweight to an off road day, where I can ride there and back in comfort.
Give it time, whichever way you go you will want another, you got the bug
