Title: Backwards Handbrake!!
Post by: Landy90IOM on October 12, 2005, 13:49:10
Right, I'm confused to say the least... just replaced my rear brake pads, jumped in the landy do go for a spin, start her up, reach down, let the hand brake off... and as i move my hand away, the handbrake flys up again and locks on!! now i know its a transmission brake, but would it have anything to do with the fact ive just replaced the rear pads?!  there is no way of getting the handbrake off, unless i hold it down.  It feels as though the spring has reversed and instead of pushing the handbrake down, its pushing it up! when i move with the handbrake pushed down, there is some 'grinding' noise like if the brakes are touching the drum, but that could also be the noise of the back pads on the disc, due to me just changing them...  any ideas guys?!

think ive pinpointed it to the cable getting stuck somewhere as i can see when i release the handbrake the cable isnt feeding back through and its just bending at the lever end, therefore pushing the handbrake back up.  where is the most likely place it will be sticking? and how would i go about freeing it?

I have a similar problem, just not to that extent.  Mine more annoying than causing a problem.

You are right, the rear brakes have nothing to do with the handbrake.

Best course of action is to get the handbrake drum off, strip and clean the mechanism then put it all back together and adjust it.

I cant remember if the 300tdi handbrake has cable all the way to the drum! What happens is that your cable fills up with mud and wont return.. all you should do is ideally replace the cable, but what u can so is spray a shed load of penetrating oil down the lever end of cable so it trickles down and frees it! If u can take the cable off the landy, and i took the cable out of its plastic tube and cleaned it and put it back, it worked fine!

turns out it was just one of the shoes sticking therefore not letting the cable go to its full length, good ole wd-40 did the trick though! thanks for the help!
