-
sounds like you will need to bleed the system
-
hi john if you start the engine up, then slacken the bleed screw ontop of the power steering boxand let fluid flow out slowly until its a steady flow [ie no air bubbles] then tighten it up check fluid level turn steering wheel full left and right lock and it should be ok.

Describe lumpy??
Mine was, when turning it was slack then about every 20degrees or so heavy then slack then heavy.
Blead the system no help, thinking about new pas box, but then found the UJ joint in the connection from column to pas box had gone.
replaced that and smooth again and lighter than before.
-
Could also be a faulty steering damper if it is 'lumpy'
-
but was it lumpy before you changed the pas box. joe

I can say with a great deal of horrible experience that you may have a knackered UJ.
I had the same problem.
After replacing the steering damper, pas pump, steering box, and ball joints I found out it was five quids worth of UJ

PAS drive belt slipping. Let's hope as it's the cheapest to fix.
