think my head gasket is leaking.
getting a slight chuffing noise behind the turbo.
going to order a new gasket but which one there are 3
how do i tell before i take it apart?
can anyone help??
-
if its chuffing from behind the turbo it will be the exhaust/inlet manifold gasket,
if its chuffing from the oil cap its the headgasket
Or could be a stud for the rocker shaft pulled out causing the chuff
-
the noise seems to be coming from round about the manifold area.definately not the oil cap
-
exhaust manifold gasket id say, think they are only about £5 aswell
-
Correct me someone if I'm wrong but there are different thicknesses of gasket because the compression ratio is critical in a Deisel. I did the Cav once and you have to measure the projection of the piston crowns above the block before deciding which gasket to go for. Once the pistons are covered in carbon they touch the cylinder head
Anyway you need to check either with a dealer or a manual as there should be some identification on the gasket that's visible whilst it's fitted.
-
apparently there is 3 gaskets for the tdi.
they are all marked but i dont know where the marks are and if they are visible.
if they were i would just order a new head gasket anyway and keep it in my spares box.

Have a look on the edge of the gasket on the driver's side (I think). You should see a protrusion of the gasket and it ought to have a number of holes punched in it.
There should be 1, 2 or 3 holes... this is the way the gasket thickness is identified.
-
excellent thanx for that.
i'll just get my jacket
-
if you have a got a head gasket its worth having the head skimmed as well or at the very least checked to make sure its flat
-
if its been skimmed fit the 3 holer as thats the thickest IIRC,need to go n look at mine as it got the thickest gasket when i built the engine
-
had a look it's a 3 hole gasket i'll order one up as a spare.
thanks all
