Hi,
driving along the A6 to loughborough, all of a sudden there was a horrible juddering noise, then BANG and lots of smoke from under the bonnet.
I pulled over VERY QUICKLY and got out to find a trail of fluid on the road and the propshaft hanging down under the car.
first phone call to husband - very upset, car has blown up, engine destroyed, just got out with life, you know the story!
second phone call to recovery people - need a large towtruck!!
third phone call to garage
it appears that the universal joint has given way and also put a hole in the transfer casing. Beast is now with garage, who will receive lots of phone calls from me (average usually one per hour) asking what is happening!!!
now awaiting to hear from the garage - we were due to go to france on friday in the disco - hoping with all fingers, toes, legs & arms crossed that it will be ok.
sigh,

Ouch!
I blew a front UJ , and cos I was only going slow at the time it only dented my sump by the filler plug - could had been much worse.
-
total worst case scenario - new transfer box and fitting £800, new prop and fitting £100. Ok so it's quite a lot of money but look on the bright side it could have been much much worse!

where i used to work we had a JCB fastrac in that dropped the front prop, it dug in the road and took the transmission clean off the engine and dumped the whole lot in the road

Ouch!
Hope it doesnt take too long to get back on the road. I know you wont like that silver 2wd thing for long

Hi,
i am hoping that it is merely the case that has been popped, the garage can get that fixed, the prop shaft and uv will need to be replaced and hopefully that will sort it, rather than the entire transmission.
yes it could have been a lot worse, but having just had the car serviced at this garage tues & wed .......... lets see what happens

Just had it service and it broke down......
...curious.....
Anyway, an Ashcrofts recon transfer box is way less than £800 fitted and a S/H prop should be £15. One thing to check, has it bent the rear diff input shaft too?

Hi,
thanks for that info, andrew, i have put it onto my list to ask the garage

It might be cheaper for you to buy them a webcam so you can watch!

France on Friday..... will you be back for the pub meet or is there a spare seat now?
-
Hi,
the garage have said it may be ready tonite, the transfer case was able to be welded, transmission appears to be ok - they cannot check the input shaft to rear diff until they drive it (threw them with that one) , but no comment yet on who is paying for the repairs.........wait and see.....am sending geoff to sort that one out - i am too likely to kneecap someone & get into major trouble!
we are only going on a weekend "lets see how much wine and beer you can fit in a disco with roof basket" trip, will definitely be back in time for pub meets on monday and wednesday!!!! (might be in the peugeot tho')

Hi,
much to my joy - car is now safely on the drive and the garage did not ask anything for repairs - they did it all without a murmur. very happy with the service and will go back there in future as they have shown integrity.
