hmmmm really............

sounds just like mine when it had a wheel bearing go on the front luckily it did outside my hous, its either that or one of the cv joints i suspect
-

The bearings have seized, the squealing was it complaining as the inner race ran around the stub axle, as you stopped it began to fuse together so that it wouldn't run. The bad news is you need a new bearing kit and a new stub axle, they cost £100 plus so you will want a s/h one. When you get that check the state of the bronze bush inside it before fitting. If the stub axle has been heated at all you will probably find the inner race won't fit back on, or come off either. If it's the inner one you can pull the hub off and leave the bearing on, if it's the outer you will struggle to dissasemble it all.
The bearing races are brittle and can be removed with a chisel if all else fails.
Finally you can check it's not the CV as soon as you remove the outer section of driveshaft from the hub, I'd put money on it that the hub still won't turn, a cv joint would be more likely to dissintergrate than lock up, they aren't that strong.

looks like im putting my name down for a lot of overtime then :(

............. the AA just said "its Broke"
hmmmm really............
Presumably you got transported home, but maybe a quick complaint might be in order, 'it's broke' could have come from a child!
(I'm just thinking of compensation / discounts - it all helps!)
-
yup got transported in the end after the little man in his "van" turned up 1st...
-
I had the same thing happen on my old Rangie, doing 60 mph down the Irvine bypass near Glasgow. That wakes you up!!
I always used to carry tools around in the back and took the hub apart to check, saw it was cream crackered and called the RAC.
The girl said "We'll send someone out to you." so I told her not to bother sending a van cos the only way this was moving was with a full lift.
Sure enough, a transporter arrived about 30 minutes later and I was away home! :D
As RRB says, I needed a new set of bearings and a stub axle (which a mate happend to have in his garage ) and I was back on the road by that evening. :D
-
still no word from garage to confirm its even a bearing
