How much play should there be between my rear prop and the engine?
what i did at the weekend was jack up one of my rear wheels, with the handbrake off and in gear, tried turning the rear wheel,
at the propshaft, i get about 1/8th of a turn, which i think is a tad excessive.
the reason i did this is that i am getting a thunk from the rear of the vehicle whenever i change gear. this seems to have developed over the last few weeks, and its starting to worry me.

tried checking the oil level in the diff? it's amazing how quickly it disappears.....

the play in the axle is fine, its the play in the gearbox/transfer box that worries me.

But wouldn't the clunk then come from the centre? Rear is usually rear diff. Might seem alright turning bits by hand, but when it's trying to push a Landy it's a bit more pressured

Best way to find where your slak is, chock wheels, take off handbrake, make sure in neutral, get underneath and try turning rear prop.
If you get movement then it's the rear diff.
Try the same with it in gear and 1 back wheel jacked up, movement = gear box.
1/8 turn isn't bad. Can be more with an overdrive fitted.
Check OIL!!!!
Try turning the radio to full volume :D

there is some slack in the rear diff/axle, i'm not worried about that, its the same as its always been.
the problem is when i try the test James says above, with the handbrake on theres not much play, when i take the handbrak off i can the prop rotate 1/8th of a turn, which i've never noticed before.
i do need to check the oil in the gearbox and transfer box, i havent done it since i MOTd it in May

1/8 of a turn is not bad.
Check your oil regularly and see what happens.
