Post by: TimM on October 28, 2005, 10:07:07: For a while I was getting mine from WHSmiths as they had them on 3 for 2. I usually only wanted 1 or 2 but it never hurts to have too many.

(Except now I've got Memory Map aswell!)

Are you after a specific map, or is this just a general query?

Of those Waterstones and Ottakers are both run through Amazon so my preference is to have a look at theose two for offers, and then buy frm amazon if there aren't any. OS have an offer at the moment for a free pair of binoculars.

The thing against internet shopping is always postage costs.

I think I payed just over Ã‚Â£7 for my last map out of WHSmiths, so that should give you something to price against.

I already use memory Map - but for certain occasions, you still can't beat a proper printed OS map :)

I've been to the OS web site and ordered the maps I need - looks like I'll be getting some snazzy binoculars too :wink:

Post by: NeilWilson on October 28, 2005, 15:54:04: OS also do a handy print-your-own map (bit more than a standard map though) that you can centre on a specific location. When we were on holiday in the Cotswolds this year I would have needed about 3 standard maps to cover the local area. Cheers.

Post by: TimM on October 28, 2005, 16:17:35: I've got a few clients who have bought one of those so that there business is in the centre, then they've drawn rings to mark delivery charges.

Could be very useful as Neil says for combining 2 maps - where we went to North Yorkshire last weekend laning, I bought 2 maps to cover the route, in hindsight that might have been a good idea then to have the main area of the route in the middle - and only one map....

Post by: Siecroz on October 31, 2005, 12:02:28: Landranger maps are superb. I have used them for about 15 years for walking & expeditions.

1:50,000 scale show most features/routes and boudaries. Not to mention the Relief of the land.

You can get some software that has these maps built in. Arquet Maps. Its produced by the OS and is available from some of the larger chain of outdoor shops. Allows you to plan and print routes on A4 pages as well... also works out complete distance and shows Relief and total height gained too.

I would also look at a 1:25,000 map (think their called Leisure maps, usually in a yellow cardboard cover)

Although they are quite cumbersome, they are VERY detailed.

If anyone is interested, I have made a presentation about Relief & Verticle Interval. Its on Powerpoint. I use it to teach kids Map & Compass and Navigation so its nice and basic to understand.

It may take me a few days to get it posted, but if anyone is interested let me know.
