The Greater manchester police are famous for their use of Range rovers and we have all heard stories of Police Range rover's towing 40 ton artics off the motorway.
Recently though the Greater Manchester police have been running around in Mercedes ML's ,but I bet they had the Range rovers this week when I saw 2 ML's towing an Artic off the motorway when 1 rangie would have done it before. I believe the GMP went for the ML's was because of the running cost of the Range Rovers ,but if it takes 2 to do the job of 1 rangie wouldn't that be cheaper .

I had been informed they were going for the X5 as a replacement to the Rangies... :shock:
Their reasoning is not the mechanical aspect, as like, the Jaguar engines are superb, but the electrics were unreliable, and there had been conflicts between the police kit with the Rangie's computer stuff.

Hi Steel .
Travel the M62 , M60 every day and GMP are definetly using Mercedes ML's , BMW 5 series estates and the odd Volvo V70. Not seen an X5 yet.
The Highway agency are using Ford Galaxy's and series 3 Discoverys so thats a plus on thier part.

West Yorkshire Traffic has Range Rover L322's Sean, I've seen 2 differant ones at the Hospital.
They've got at least 1 Discovery 2, but it's fitted with a pneumatic light mast through the roof.

I do over 2000miles a week and out of 4wd's I see more X5's broken down or on recovery trucks then any other.

Don't the Police electronics run as a stand alone system & not interface with the original equipment except for perhaps the alternate head-light flashing? (if used)

Well around Oxfordshire and Warwickshire you'll be pleased to knwo they are still using the Range Rover! They have a fleet of 6 which do the M40. On a recent club trip we were all parked up and they came and spoke to us.
Nice guys, even nicer brand new Rangie!!!

I have not got a clue. It's only information I've been told by a retired police officer, who still is in contact with his old work friends. (he also happens to work at the Manchester Police Museum)
I personally, don't believe it either... considering that there arn't many other vehicles that are capable of doing what the Range Rover can do. One tactic that I've seen used, is a Rangie was used to block in another car... and in one case, a police Rangie blocked in a stolen Range Rover Classic, which then reversed back into the front of the police Rangie. The thief got away from that police officer, because the air bags went off inside the police Rangie. :shock:
