My swivel pins are a bit leaky, there is some very slight pitting on them. Now I have access to EP-90, EP-140 and EP-250 would thicker oil be better for the pins than the one shot grease ?
The thing that bothers me is a remembering an old car I had with sealed for life ball joints, pre-packed with grease. Lasted all of 3 years than had to be changed ! surely being able to drain off the swivels and refilling with oil is preferable to filling with grease you cant change.

who says you cant change grease i take mine for a decent drive warm up the grease and it becomes more oily anyway drain soon as whilst warm and re-place with one-shot do every 6-8 months as a matter of habbit not necassary but with the amount of offroading i do its wise to use grease as it dont leak out of housing seals like all the oils do and i find is easier to put into housing in first place as you can squeeze like a toothpaste and get every last drop in must admit its a bit pricey for just grease never had any problems with it though regards colin

I see, I thought as it was grease it would stay relatively solid even when warm like most automotive greases do.
I also thought as it was called "one shot" it was a fill and forget solution.

I think it's called one shot as a tube is enough to do one side :-.
what tends to happen is that the grease will leak out via the wiper seal as it's not perfect (not too suprising) and eventually you run out.
The earlier discos did use oil in the swivels, but this was changed and subsequently retrofitted by landrover, so I'm guessing they had their reasons.

when ever doing swivel bearings or swivel seasl at work always use oneshot grease,
the reason its called one shot is exactly what daz said (one per side)
even with knackered swivel seasl you would be surprised how it doesnt actually leak out that much,might end up with a slight bead o grease but nothing as bad as when you use EP90,
PS i use EP90 in the racers swivels mainly cos its easier to pick broken bits out of oil than grease

Once you've run the one-shot it gets a lot thinner anyway but it cantains solids to lubricate the CV joint etc as well as an oil componenet for the bearings. Incidentally I like to squeeze it in through the stub axle so the new grease goes inside the cv then works it's way out from there.
