Title: Name a front axle component for me please...
Post by: petergalileo on October 31, 2005, 20:42:07
Just about to convert my V8 disco 1 from a boot lpg tank to underslungs.  I want to change a couple of bushes before I do this so hopefully I never have to touch them again.  The bushes in question are located under the floor (obviously) near enough under the front seats.  They are part of a really meaty cast iron arm that goes down under the swivel housing (well just behind it) They appear to stop the axle from twisting.  I am guessing these are the radius arms but with so many rods, arms and actualtors its difficult to know whats what !

those are the front radius arms, you want the chassis bushes for them...

failing that, the "doughnut shaped ones which fit next to the chassis" will probably get you the correct set :)

:D Dont need the arms, they are fine, just wanted to change the bushes before fitting the tanks as it will be a lot of hastle to do once they are fitted.

no worries

a word of warning is you will need to remover the arms to replace the axle end bushes and they can be a real pain in the backside, a 30 tonne press wouldnt get mine out, had to use the oxy-acetaline gear in the end and burn them out

eh........No

if they need done get them done,if not it leads to scary scary handling & a set of clunks that you will spend ages looking for,can also cause wear on other components,

BTW there is 2 widths of bushes to go in the front of the radious arms (axle end) & the top hat bushes at the chassis are the same for disco/rangie/def & about £1 each, the radious arm bushes are about £4 each

Trust me buy the ones for 40 quid, you could spend that in sweat trying to get the old ones out! Bargain at 40 as you will spend at least 25 on the bushes anyway. Worth doing as they will improve you handling and front axle travel if you havent already got polybushes.
A large angle grinder will get the old ones out if they are really stubborn(usually) and dont forget loads of copperslip on the bushes and bolts when you put them back.

If you're only replacing the rear bushes (chassis end) they are a doddle.
They fall off.
The fronts are a different beast and as said previously go poly bush as they are easier to replace next time.
