Can I fit a 3.5 or 3.9 efi into my 110 using the carbs from the existing 3.5 V8? Am I likely to need different metering needles?
Any other problems that I might encounter fitting a later engine into the '83 LR?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Yes
I don't know what will happen with your needles though, It will want tuning.
The big difference with the EFi lump is the heads are slightly better, the combustion chamber is different and the valves are bigger. Also the exhaust manifolds are much better but I think the driver's side one will not fit if memeory serves correctly. The 3.9 also had a much better cam than the 3.5 and this accounts for the extra HP that the 3.9 had.
If you fit a 3.5 you can still add the 3.9 cam.

Thanks. That's useful to know.
The exhaust manifold problem isn't an issue since I'm going to fit tubular ones anyway.
I appreciate the needle issue and assumed it would need dealing with. I go through this on a daily basis with kids who throw a K&N filter on their Mini and wonder why it goes all asthmatic on them at 50mph!

Why not fit the EFi?

Is it not ECU driven? I don't want to get into all that. Want to keep it as simple as possible so I can fix it with a big hammer

You can still fix it with a hammer. Component fails - hit it with hammer and replace with new!
Don't be scared of efi systems - they are pretty reliable if you take your time with the initial insatllation.

The other problem is we are coming up to a time of year when I can't afford the 110 to be out of commission for too long. It's our tow vehicle to move animal feed through the winter. So the simpler the swap, the quicker it will be.

When I say take your time, it may not take as long as getting the jetting right for the carbs. If you get the engine loom and ecu from the doner vehicle it should just be power up and play!

Oh right. I'll consider that then. Thanks.

Pal of mine who runs a Range Rover did exactly what you propose and apart from a tune up on a Sun machine did nothing to the carbs, twin Strombergs.

Interesting...
I'm keeping my options open. All this info just means I have a wider choice of engines.
All the help and advice is genuinely appreciated.
