Title: Land Rover magazines
Post by: thermidorthelobster on November 03, 2005, 13:18:01
Interested to find out which mags people tend to favour?

I find LRO is now a bit formulaic - plenty of content but a bit dull in places.

LRE is not bad, but a bit rabid at times, and has a slightly budget feel (although I have to be careful here as I write for it sometimes!)

LRW is OK at times but can be a bit of a quick read.

Currently I favour LRM - good writing, interesting range of subjects.

What about everybody else?

i have just subscribed to LRO
but in all honesty i try to read most over the month
which one i buy first depends on an article that takes my fancy

I subscribe to LRO and find it has the right balance of features against adverts, but after reading the posts on here, I usually end up buying another (or several) others each month as there is always a good feture I want to read or they have a Mud-Clubber in.

I've now given up all of my mag subscriptions except for TOR.
I got sick of regurgitated articles.
Oh and the adverts. Given the number of adverts you'd expect the mags to be cheaper.

They're all as bad as each other. I only get TOR as it also features other makes apart from Land Rover. So no vote from me then.....

I didn't include TOR because I thought once I went outside Land Rover-specific mags, there would be a whole load of others to choose from...

All a bit Landrover orientated (strange that!) for my taste. Contary to what some people believe there's more to 4x4 than the Solihull products. TOR at least features a more balanced range of new, older and custom vehicles. Some of the other so called '4x4' mags appear to be aimed at caravan towers and new vehicles only market with very little actual offroad content.

I get all 4, been getting 'LRO' since 1990 (& got quite a few from before then)
All 'LRW's, 'LRE's' & 'LRMs'

On the whole over the past few years, 'LRM' has possibly got the best overall range of features & it's got some damn good writers
Frank Elson & Ross Floyd used to write for 'LRO' a few years ago before it was sold to the big publishers (always enjoyed Elson for almost 20years)

With their backing 'LRO' can afford to send their staff writers off on all the trips they do.

'LRW' always seems to swing along nicely whenever John Carroll's at the helm.
I remember him writing  for a little title simply called '4x4' & he had the touch even then.
They ocassionally use an illustrator (Louise Limb) who, in conjunction with JC, used to do a great deal for a motorcycle magazine called 'Back Street Heroes' (I think he was the editor & still? has his chopped Harley)

'LRE' is excellent for the historical items & rarities, due to the knowledge of the editor; James Taylor

I totally acknowledge that, but the question was specifically about Land Rover magazines, not 4x4 magazines.  Feel free to run a poll about other brands' magazines.

If we had an "Everything Land Rover" forum I'd have put it in there.

LRE was the king but is rubbish now.  LRO seems the best LR mag, TOR is the best all round mag though
