Title: A Sleepy Little Hamlet
Post by: Bush Tucker Man on November 03, 2005, 19:25:10
I'd been out this afternoon photographing, over in the old East Riding for a couple of hours.
Off the A614 just to the north-east of Howden, there's a wonderful sign pointing down a little side-lane.
It's nothing much, just a few farms & an old staith on Market Weighton canal.

I think it's just the imagery of it being a time-warp Rip-van-Winkel type of place.

In Hull there's a street called 'Land Of Green Ginger' & you can even buy a  house (http://www.riverside-property.co.uk/site/go/search?location=HU1%202E) on it

Oh!, the photos? Market Weighton & Bishop Burton (I'd live there!)

Yes, it's on the old route of the Great North Road, which then rejoins the A167 (according to a brilliant book about the GNR in front of me)

See this page for a possible origination of the name (http://www.biffvernon.freeserve.co.uk/chester-le-street.htm)

Then, on the subjet of odd names, there's NoMansLand (http://uk.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=285000.835626831&Y=115000.528424983&width=500&height=300&gride=283343.835626831&gridn=114007.528424983&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=1&scale=25000) in Devon (near Tiverton)

Garth I've found the thread with the book details, if you're interested?

Near Yelverton in Devon lie the villages of Leg o' Mutton and Crapstone.  I once met a girl from Crapstone, she was quite embarrassed about it.

And a few miles north of California Cross, again in Devon, lies Sign of the Owl.

It's a lovely little Cumbrian town, nothing wrong with it.
