using a laptop with a max screen res of 1024x768 i'm findning it a bit of a pain having to scroll down a whole page of someones sig, this makes it even worse if the same person posts a couple of times in one topic as i need to scroll down 2 or 3 pages to read a couple of lines of text
this is a plea for people to have slightly smaller sigs PLEASE
Steve

I'll second that, most of the signature stuff would eb better in a profile.
-
How is mine then is it to much for the laptop or are we getting silly...?
-
signitures are easily restricted in the admin control panel. Trouble is, the more you restrict what people can do, the more you make it a controlled forum. Then the forum will cease to be that which it is now.
Change isn't always good!

Thats not what i or anyone else wants, more like just being considerate of others
Not trying to moan about this great forum, or burden the admin team with any grief, just a polite request

Yes, I agree that some sigs are edging towards the large size
Possibly, it's a case of "because I can", but maybe this post you've started will make people think about it....

You're probably the cause, mate

I'm feeling a bit guilty now ... might have to have a re-design...
-
I'm with Steve on this, just didn't like to say anything!
The problem with restricting the number of characters in the sig is that it means you can't include invisible things like links, but doesn't cut down on the number of huge graphics.
The guideline on Usenet used to be that 4 lines was acceptable, 6 lines at a push, anything more than that was too much.
In this world of multimedia maybe we should say if your sig is regularly longer than your post, it's too long!
However, an easier solution to this would be to say - why not turn your signature off unless you think it contributes to the general discussion (eg, includes details of a vehicle you're discussing)? For example, I generally include mine if I'm starting a thread, but turn it off if I'm replying to somebody else's, unless I feel it helps to clarify a point I've made (eg by saying what vehicle I have).
I'm not trying to turn this into an autocracy, just promote thought & discussion!
(My sig below so I can see how long it looks...)
-
Your all going to make me feel guilty now
I've just made mine bigger.......
-
FWIW I find the long sigs a nuisance - TBH it's not as if there's anything there that needs to be repeated or in my case read at all. I couldn't care less what car you drive or what modifications you've made - this is a forum for advice and debate.
I like to see the posts plain and simple and see the converstaion grow.
But then that's only my view.

Its the toylander BTM that just tips it over the scales of being Extra Large....LOL
Funny thing is it sould not be Toylander it should be Sheets of wood and Instruction for a toylander....LOL

There You go Steve! I trimmed it up a Little?
It was Getting a Bit out of Control?
-
Looks better Nev.
:D
I dont agree with resticted sig's, we've just gotta keep the size down.
Its the pics and flags that can get *a bit* out of control
-
We've never really clamped down on excessive sigs, and to be fair I am a little reluctant to do so, having said that, we have suggested (politely) on occasion that people trim their sig size.
A little self moderation is probably best :)

Datalas! Could we not have another tab at the bottom besides the Pm - Email-Profile-Photo etc for Vehicle Mods? Because members do pm asking how to do this and that?
-
once we've got the vehicle bio page back up and running we can certainly consider doing something along those lines.
-
Excellent Many Thanks! That would also help with peeps not putting their Specs on their signatures?
-
This is really good to see.
I totally agree with what Steve said but it's even better to see it taken in the right spirit.
Self moderation is always better that restriction.
-

I've only started because i cant change my vehicle bio.
As soon as it's back on line my sig will shrink again too.
:D
-
I totally agree that the vehicle mods shouldn't be in the signature, I never read them and I do find it annoying that I'm seeing the same things over and over again in some threads.
I like the comment about "if your signature is longer than your post...." :) and I would have said if it's longer than your avatar, it's probably too long.

The same could be said about the various logos, flags, etc
Actually, although not very often, I do find the car details in sigs to be useful! When I'm thinking about doing something to mine, it's interesting to read the sigs of others to gather ideas.
Still - short is still better than long :)
-
Gords! Thats why i asked Datalas for a Mods Tab at the bottom Next to the Photo's and Pm etc?
-
I am just guessing but I think your going to say mine is too big? Right?

This should all now be in place :-)

I dont agree, personally i love this forum and welcome advice from anyone but specs make the difference to how seriously i take that advice.
A separate area is ok but i have not got the time or inclination to spend more time uploading stuff that may or may not be viewed. All my 4x4 friends would rather be out playing or fixing the problem we just caused.
Sorry but knowing the upper pinion bushing on a 1954 whatever really doesnt intrest me...have you done it yourself? does. I have trimmed mine so as not to offend anyone. I like my spec if you dont read it then hey im not going to get upset but each and every stage has been carried out by me...not a garage.
I feel justified in listing it and if you ever want to know how hard it really is to do that 5 minute job.......feel free to pm me.
-
I don't think anyone is making you take stuff out of your signature - the new facility is there if you want to use it.
This thread was started because of the extra time (downloading, scrolling, etc) involved due to the growing number of large sigs.
It's just being nice to think about these poor people who can't afford Broadband
And personally, I think any advice should be taken with at least a small amount of salt! Just because someone has been there/done it does not necessarily mean the advice suits everyone :)
-
I tend to agree more with Tuftee and Datalas.
Each to his own, but I think having the specs in the Vehicle Bio makes for easier reading.
And if you've an Avatar that doesn't show your vehicle, it's OK to list all the mods, but it would be a help if you included what Make/Model it is (he hinted with a :) )
It's also dead easy to cut/paste from your profile to the vehicle bit
