Title: Ouch
Post by: MTyrrell on November 04, 2005, 13:15:49
Was sent this by email at work by a colleague,

Apparently an American woman rented a Citron C4 in Budapest and drove it 220Km in first gear thinking it had an automatic box. Apparently it didn’t blow the engine but the engine bay got red hot.

Personally I don't think this is true, looks more to be the result of a fire. You’d have smelt burning and stopped long before it got to that stage.
Not to mention it wouldhave been screaming its head off.

What do you lot recon true or hoax

It sounds a bit dodgy, but there doesnt seem to be any signs of burning or flames.  Just everything seems to have got very hot and melted... Not sure... Im gonna put it down to the fact its French!  :P

Funnily enough, this very same story used to be an American woman driving round the M25...  I suspect it is an urban myth.

That looks like fire damage to me... looks a bit like the engine bay of tigger last year :-(

I would have expected everything to be covered in soot if it was an engine fire... I know mine was when I had one..... Saying that, I would have expected any modern car to go into "Limp Home" mode if it got too hot.

No it not true. It has been a fire. We have been involved alot with burnt cars. The fire damage was not a direct fire. The fire would have been low down. I have seen this a few times and its because most new cars are very air tight at the top. The flames had no oxygen at the top of the engine bay but the heat was great and it causes the plastic to melt.
