Title: Bargain?
Post by: Dizzy Dave on November 04, 2005, 17:19:39
I've just brought a Discovery 3.9 auto 1995, no T/T for £500 from my brother, he has just brought a Discovery 2 3.9 on a V plate, anyway what happend was this, before i brought this Dizzy of him he got one of his spark plugs stuck in the drivers side head, pot 4 i do believe, so he gave it some stick but it broke off just below the nut head leaving just the threads in the head, now the sillyness begines......instead of getting it reamed out and a new helli coil fitted he tried to use a so called easy out tool to remove the threads but the threads were having none of it......(anybody guess whats coming next?) well he left it at that and deceided it was about time he got a mark 2 discovery, so he sold me his old one and brought his mark 2, we trailered what is now my dizzy over to my house where i set work on taking the said head of......what did i find when i took this head off?..... well the easy out tool was 2+ inches long.....and he never made sure that the piston was not up, it was up and the easy out tool put a nice threaded whole through the top of the piston.....new piston on it's way, o well i'd better get this head over to the local garage for a new hellie coil, got it back and started lapping in the valves untill i got to the inlet valve of the newly hellie coiled part...... what did i find? well the inlet valve seat had warped with all that presure that my brother used to try and extract the threads, after grinding there was a lip appering on one side of the valve seat ond on the other side the grinding hadn't touch about 3mm and putting a length of cotton into the valve hole and putting the valve back in i could still pull the cotton out past the valve, so i'm gona take out the engine and completly rebuild it myself......still a bargain?......you tell me.
Dave....

Even if you've got to acquire a replacement engine, its' worthwhile if it's in good condition.

Heck!, it's surely worth more than that if you decide break it for parts

At least if you build it yourself you have piece of mind that you know its right....And on the other hand if it goes wrong you know you missed something.

Ya it's a bargin,

There are loads of V8 heads on the likes of eBay and if that fails then the likes of RPi do recon ones alot cheaper than you would have got the motor if it was working!!

I've just aquired a 3.5 EFi motor, complete with altenator, PAS pump all the EFi gear (minus ECU & AFM) for £147 on eBay. So they are about!  :D

If you need an engine, Andy at www.landroverheaven.com has a 3.9 for sale, I think he wants about £350 - £400 for it, complete.
