Title: Common problem with lighting switch ? 1991
Post by: s.stirley on November 14, 2005, 14:30:54
Is there a common problem with the lighting switch ? not long after I bought the Disco (1991 V8i) the headlights totally failed, traced that to a wire off at the back of the switch which was simple to solder back on.

Few months later the lights would only come on at sidelights initially but stay on headlights if you flashed the main beam. I bought some new switches at the P'boro show, full set of stalks. Swapped them on saturday and noticed last night that now the sidelights don't work ! and consequently the tail-lights etc.

Seems between the two sets I might have one good one, and hopefully I can swap the switch over between them and be OK. For now I've soldered a wire from the headlight position to the sidelight position (checked on spares, they're both on for headlights usually) so it all works when switch is on headlights (and I never use just sidelights anyway).

Must be a common problem ?

The majority of 89-94 model Discovery's did not employ relays for the lighting, rather the feed to the headlamps was wired directly from the battery through the stalk-switch to the lights resulting in lots of people experiencing problems with lights after a good few years.

I understand the Montego/Metro stalk is a direct replacement, however to reinforce this it is also recommended to modify the wiring to introduce the relays to reduce the future possibility of breakdown of the stalk.

i had this problem for a few months on my 1993 disco

In the end it turned out to be the bullet connectors on the end of the wirng loom where they plug into the stalk

the female ends deteriorate and become loose, and you get a high resistance joint, heat increases etc and the switch mechanism burns out

I robbed some new stalks and the end of the wiring harness from a metro and replaced the multiplug on the end to fix the problem.
Its been fine ever since.
