Title: Steering - Has anyone?

Hi

few years ago i was told that to reinforce the steering cost effectively you could put inside the steering rod at the front a piece of steel, similar to that used on building sites with the 'U' in the end and they normally tie tape around them to cordon of areas or alternatively the steel used to reinforce concrete, then fill it with grease.

Has anyone done this?

sounds odd idea but i guess it could work!
got some solid steel bar at work so will have to check diameter.

I think it saves paying out for a "Dan Bar" if thats what they are called and obviously protects the steering bar........?

I was told this trick by one of the guys at Keith Gotts.  Just never tried it, and wondered if anyone had tried, obviously no one has heard of it  :lol:

Heard of putting a steel tube over the track rod but not in it.

Me, I've got a spare track rod in the garage.  :D

sound like it will have the same effect as putting a larger tube around the orignal one, I guess anything to strengthen it, I just wish we had done somehting on the 90 before we bent it last month!!!!

Obviously it will have some effect but it'as a lot of weight for little gain.  The reason tube is used in the first place is that all the stress is carried by the 'skin' of the bar, soo metal on the inside does almost nothing.  To make it stiffer you could use as much metal in a thinner walled tube with larger diameter.  It's called the moment of area and in the direction of stress the strength is roughly proportional to the cube of the diameter.

Come on the RRB what do you do for a living??
At the cost from qt for a heavy duty one you may just want to order one...about 35 quid if memory serves me correctly. I cant see the point in spending ages fabricating something that may or not work correctly.

The stuff they use on building sites with the u on the end will bend and rust (they're made of iron), so best look elsewhere I reckon.
