not had the disco when its snowed, but which are best for normal drivin in snow on roads a/t's or m/t's? and should the pressures be kept normal or slightly underinflated? :-k
if it does snow good and propper, the last thing i want is to get stuck especialy with a 4x4
-
I read a test in one of the mags they said A/T's are best. But snow is not the problem it the ice not a lot grips on that.
-
I was out and about in the snow last year on BFG A/Ts and had no problems at all - I even had to go and pick up parts from the local L/R dealer, as they weren't delivering because of the road conditions......
-
i was wondering that....
for the rangie i have a choice of greenway machos and pirelli scorpion road tyres
which are best on thin snow / ice???

Snow studs. My General Grabber MT's have the holes in ready- but I can't find anywhere selling the screw in studs. Still- you can guarantee if I did mangage to procure some we would have no winter to speak of!

A/t's are better but m/t's are still ok . Not sure what the scorpion road tyres are like but machos are a bit iffy on the road at the best of times. For bad ice, chains are best by a long way but in deep snow they dig in too much and so often bog you down...Deep snow ...drop your pressures to spread the weight and you will be ok...but remember slow, 4x4 does not equal safe in snow- just safer.

sound about right
-
AT's for snow ..just look at the tread coverage compared with MT's.....
-
im not too bothered about deeper snow as we never get it round here
i was thinking about when we get about an inch or so and it gets compacted ....
(as to your point about machos...yer i found that out earlier on wet tarmac.... )

tightly clenched buttocks spring to mind...grizzly's are similar and my mate has annaconda's...they are scary!

the object causing me to brake sharply was a smart car.....doubt i would have felt a thing in the rangie

Snow studs.
Illigal in the UK. Hence you will have difficulty buying them.

Ive got some! :D
They dont screw in, they look like an upside down mushroom(ie, wider at the base) and are pushed down into the hole. They have a tungsten carbide rode set into the middle of em that keeps em nice and sharp.
They are a complete [!Expletive Deleted!] to fit without a proper stud gun(force a 1/4 drive ratchet extension into the hole to stretch it, then push in the stud with an appropriate sized bit of pipe/tube, all lubricated with water or similar)
They are also bloody expensive(try about 35p per stud.) Dont forget youll need between 30 and 60 per tyre, 4 tyres wow
They work well on Ice tho. As for legality, Ive been stopped by police, and passed an mot with them fitted.

I can picture the scene - "There illegal sonny, but as you've got them and we haven't, can you give us a tow please."

Snow studs.
My General Grabber MT's
Grabber M/Ts. Wonderful tyres :D
Snow studs do indeed work, just watch the World Rally Championship when they're on a snowy stage.
Thin tyres (to create more ground pressure) & studs. 90-100mph+ on sheet ice
Off-camber, up-hill, down-dale & round-corners sheet ice at that :D

Also , full FIA spec roll cage, medical helicopter on hand and more talent than i can even imagine!

I know  , I was simply pointing out the differance that studs make
Sadly the cages & medical help isn't the 'be all & end all' as Peugoet found out at the Rally GB with poor Michael Parks.
Don't think any details of the incident have been released yet?, but it msut have been one hell of an impact.
-
from what i heard about it it was a very high speed impact directly into the passenger door with the car moving sideways.
Its amazing how strong those cars are, but the doors are the weakest point

what i do know being relayed from someone on the scene (medical side) that the seat was pushed on to the top of the gearbox tunnel & the car was also bent around the tree,

No matter what you do motorsport is inherently dangerous. That is the attraction of it....who has ever heard of the world tiddlywinks champion? No-one , everyone has heard of Rossi (if you havent hang your head in shame) and Mansell.
Danger is a big part of the thrill of being alive, it is what makes us what we are.
How much for the tyres and any piccies?
