Now that the Discovery has passed its MoT test (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=14489), I can start really looking for another vehicle, before SWMBO spends anymore money on the house.
Joanne says; 90CSW. We've got the Mondeo if we're going anywhere, so don't need lots of seats/space.
I reckon; 110CSW. More versatile; passengers + luggage + Dogs + trailer/BWSOW, plus there'll undoubtedly be after-school clubs/school-friends home soon.
You can get a small object into a big space, but not a big object into a small space.
I say Tdi.
Anyone out there say Td5?
However it's got to be Coniston Green
-
110tdi. Ya know its what you want and so do we. JFDI
-
Now the thing is this has been mentioned before after SWMBO has suggested, then withdrawn
Offer.. (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=4081)
And a couple of weeks ago, as we went out in the Discovery she also mentioned selling it & getting a Defender (can't find the post now  )
So I'll have to get it sorted as quickly as possible
-
If I was going to buy a single Land Rover to last me the rest of eternity it would be a 300Tdi 110. Totally practical, pretty bombproof.
-
And a couple of weeks ago, as we went out in the Discovery she also mentioned selling it & getting a Defender (can't find the post now  )
that would be this one (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=12443&highlight=)
I think you would be better off with a TDi but have voted for the TD5 as that is what is in S50RAT and so you should be used to it :?

That's the post I had in mind. Thanks

No, 'S50 RAT' is definately a Tdi, as was my old 110 Hard-Top
-
No, 'S50 RAT' is definately a Tdi
Then my vote is wrong and a TDi it should be again
-
None of the above!
300Tdi HT (in Coniston Green) - you know it makes sense!
cheers

Agree with Eeyore - none of the above
What about a Isuzu Trooper 3.1TD Citation - in CONISTON GREEN!

If you're going extreme, or want something that you maintain yourself then TDi, If you want a general runabout that can go off-road but without been silly, then TD5, If you want to see how one drives, and compare then to what your used, I'm not that far away.
-
Wel you've already chosen the wheel base, 110 meets your needs.
But I vote TD5, biased got one. ECU is not that complex and the engine isn't that different from a TDi. The wire throttle pedal has 3 sets of voltage levels used to check pedal position so can put up with a fair bit of mud and water.
TD5 has more power/torque so better for towing. Has anti stall in low range (can be stalled by sloppy clutch control.)
But would recommend an overdrive.

Nah, just slap some bigger tyres on it...

Works for me :D

I'd go for the 110 - you tow a BWSOW, which is likely to be a much more stable prospect with the 110.
As far as TDi / TD5 go, it's really down to how much you want to spend now, and in the future.
If you can find a low mileage TDi 110CSW, with a full dealer history, then it is likely to be worth every penny.
However, these are few and far between - don't be tempted to risk a non-service history vehicle.
Have you "had a go" in both engine variants in the same body? This is the best test - which you prefer to drive. If possible, try to tow your 'van with both. I think the torque delivery is slightly better in the TD5, and it can be chipped to improve this as well.
Agree with an overdrive, although you could also look at Ashcroft's alternative gears for the transfer box. Similar result, but you don't have the extra link in the chain of an overdrive (o/d breaks = no drive).
Hope this all helps. Shame S50RAT's not a V8 Auto - I'd soon help move the transaction along...
Cheers
Ben

No probs, there's 5, one for each week day and a hybrid for playing with at the weekend
-

Funnily enough, with manuals at least I prefer the 300Tdi. I find you can stick it in gear and forget about the gearbox for most of the day, whereas with the TD5 I have to work it up and down the gears more (in the Disco at least; it's a long time since I've driven a Defender TD5.)
-
I could leave the 110 TD5 in gear and more or less forget about it, but that went out the window when I put 35" Tyres on it :D
-
Richard, I'd probably go for a 110csw 300tdi if I were you. Personally I love the 300 engine & purely from a depreciation point of view there's nothing to match them at the mo. I had one from Dransfields in Stocksbridge a couple of years ago, kept it for over a year & sold it for £400 more than I bought it for!!

Over drive is better as you can switch it off when towing. Otherwise you may struggle with a BWBOW and higher gear ratios.

dont see an FC listed on there

I might hold you to that, as Guy Salmon don't even have a Td5 on the forecourt at the moment

I used to drive my mates & still love them, but I think she'd draw the line at that though
Even though she's driven it as well, be a nice motor with a Tdi
Years ago someone custom-built one with coil-springs & 110 axles & a Tdi. It looked good.
It was featured in a very early issue of 'LRW'

He he, have ya seen Drums truck Richard? It would give you no idea about how a normal TD5 behaves, it rides on 35" tyres and xtreme suspension. Very nice bit of kit, winched me out in style 8)

Jeff
Yes, that's my line of thought as well.
My old 110Tdi Hard-Top was great with its 300.
I went to that from a 2A Light-Weight - you can imagine the performance difference
Like comparing a Sopwith Camel to a F-16
On first test-driving it, the saleman was doing an indicated 85mph up the dual-carriageway to Ainley Top (http://uk.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=411500.999999552&Y=420000.944016677&width=500&height=300&gride=411699.999999552&gridn=419999.944016677&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=grid&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&zm=1&scale=25000)

I was looking at a friends Subaru Forester yesterday
-
SWMBO (backed by mother-in-law  ) is suggesting a 110 Double-Cab so I can get rid of the I-W.
It took me ages to persuade SWMBO to let me but it andnow she wants it out of the garage
I want a Station Wagon, not a Double-Cab, but since when has my opinion mattered??

If ya get a tilt like Daves it'll be practically the same although i never seen a green one.
-
Richard if I was you I'd test drive a Double Cab. They seem to have them in every main dealer, so it should be easier than finding a Station Wagon. They'll drive similar to a SW, so you can size up the TD5\300TDi debate you're having. (Not sure about getting a TDi Double Cab Though), Then you can decide on a vehicle and start hunting in earnest.
-
I've seen a couple of green ones, showed her a 130 Double-Cab the other day & she wasn't impressed
But then again, I've been looking on 'E-Bay' at 'Griffs' (http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=14956)

Now your mistake he was presentation. Firstly you show her the 88" Lightweight Restoration Project "you've always wanted", then show her the 130, as an alternative :D

I've had the 'Light-Weight Restoration' before (bag of bolts that it was), as can be seen in the 'My Old Land Rovers'album on my 'WebShots'
Now if I could find a 130 Station Wagon......
Sadly most people who have them built keep them, as they're built for a specific purpose (not a extra mid-row seating/doors example)
I'd want one with a standard 110 stye cabin & a HUGE load-space
-

If I go this route, I'd get a Ifor-Williams top, more secure
-
Got the weekend off.
Hoping to be able to get to 'Simmonites', 'Huddersfield LandRover Centre', Rocar-Moores & possibly 'High-Peak'
That's unless we get a big dollop of the 'white stuff' & then it'll be up over HolmeMoss, Woodhead Pass & Snake Pass to play in the snow
-
I've found one at Simmonites (http://www.simmonites.co.uk/), go to 'Vehicle sales', & it's T782 SCE (http://www.simmonites.com/vehi/epsom110.jpg)
There's nothing that strikes me on the Huddersfield LandRover Centre (http://www.landrovercentre.com) website.
However, they did build up Richard 'Hamster' Hammonds 110 Tilt (go to 'Friends')
Sadly they wouldn't sell me Range Rover chassis#001 lasttime I was there
High Peak (http://www.highpeak4x4.co.uk/) have only got a 110Tdi CSW listed under the Defender section
-
Called in at Guy Salmon (Wakefield) this afternoon & they're inundated with (new) Defenders now :D
Outside;Zambesi Silver; 90 Hard-Top, 90 CSW & 110 CSW
Inside;90 'Black', Tonga Green 90 Hard-Top & a Zambesi Silver 110 Double-Cab, with a very posh (colour matched) Truckman Top
Salesman was desperate to arrange a test-drive (must be coming up to end of year bonus's) :D
-

Now it's being mentioned that I might have to sell the trailer again & new Defenders are too dear.
I was browsing the current copy of 'LRE' in bed last night & Joanne was pointing put the 110 Hard-Tops in it!
I don't want a 110 Hard-Top, I've had one.
Still she did manage to show me a 110Tdi CSW, but it's 'N' plated, thus I'd lose entitlement to my plate; 'S50 RAT'
So it's a bit 'up in the air' at the moment (again) :?

I've had 2 calls from the salesman already. Pity, I've been out both times

Send him round to me when you speak to him, I could do with measuring the radius arm\outrigger gap on a new 110

Not too sure if he'll come from Barnsley Road in Wakefield up to the top end of Roundhay??

Bet he will if he thinks he's going to sell it. And besides you'll have to be there with the camera for when he's driven up specially, then I grovel under it with a tape measure then "Nah sorry Mate it's the wrong width like the one I've got"

well it looked ......okay, but quite simply the wrong colour.
Far, far, too many silver cars about today

Well..............
I've been & test-driven a '55' plate 90XS this afternoon.
Not bad those Td5's are they? (better than I thought)
And, offered a fairly good deal on an unregistered 110CSW (about £24,300 OTR)

Scratch that, been elsewhere & test-drove.
Then 'deposited' on it afterwards :D :D :D
-
It was funny in a way, I've almost had to sign a 'keep it clean' clause before Joanne agreed with me over it :(scared): :(sulk):
I quite liked the 90 XS I drove yesterday at Guy Salmon, but the thought of buying a brand spanker was a bit scary (all that money)
Plus it was an offer on the 'In Stock' special edition vehicles;
90XS (black, with air-con)
90SW 'Silver'
110SW 'Silver'
110Double-Cab 'Silver'
So a trawl of local dealers took place on t'internet' last night;
1. 110 Td5 CSW ('T'plate) at the Huddersfield Land Rover Centre (http://www.landrovercentre.com/)
2. 90 Heritage ('V' plate) at Simmonites (http://www.simmonites.com)
3. 90 Heritage ('W' plate) at Buxton 4x4 (http://www.buxton4x4.co.uk)
And the one mentioned in this afternoons post
Richard

48,000miles & fully stamped history book
In fact I've even seen this vehicle before somewhere in the hands of its previous owner.
