does any one know any were that makes nice aftermarket bumpers for the td5 discovery i have seen the arb ones but think that they look a bit too big does anybody have any other ideas?thanks
-
TJM do a bumper-cum-bullbar as well, and it's not quite as big as the ARB.
There's a piccy of a 'normal' bumper on the Southdown site, but I believe that was a one-off.
Mark at Discoparts was looking at manufacturing a D2 bumper - unfortunatley I don't know how far he's got.

Here's a TJM. Less agricultural then an ARB I reckon.
The Discoparts one is under way as I understand it. Mark informed me that the bits are going for cutting and folding in the near future, and then they need to be welded up. Will be interested to see it.
-
thanks for the help guys the tjm does look better than the arb one it would still be nice to see a few more before i buy, maybee i will wait untill the disco parts ones are ready before i purchase, the tjm is the best one i have seen so far!

Have we any idea of a price :?:

D44 have the ARB ones on their site, look jolly nice and appear to be colour coded too...
sorry, being all girly :)

the arb one on the devon 4x4 site is called the arb safari and it only fits the later discovery 2 ,i like that one a lot but my discovery is a 2001 model so i dont think it will fit, the only one they do for the early discovey twos is the massive one, on the arb web site it only says available to fit late disco 2s,wheater it will fit early disco 2s and its just says that because the original drive lights from the late disco twos front bumper will fit streight in to the safari bumper i dont know.I am surprised scorpion racing dont do any after market bumpers for the td5 disco.
-
That's the ARB Sahara Bar. I'll check fitment for an 01 D2.. fairly sure they are available though.
D44 have something in the pipeline which will be along similar lines to the competition bumpers for the Defender / D1.. there has been a prototype fitted to the vehicle, but final designs / prices aren't yet set.

Hi guys. ARB do two sorts of bumbers for the Disco 2. The Sahara bar is listed for the face lifted model but 'should' fit earlier models however the face lifted radiator grille would probably have to be put on. This bar is not colour coded as standard, I believe it comes in black. The alternative ARB, for the pre-facelifted Disco 2, is a full bar where, rather than an A frame (like on the Sahara bar) there is a full bull bar fitted. The sahara bar is not a cheap option!
The TJM bar is very well made, cheaper and a bit lighter (sorry, don't know the exact weight off hand). This comes powder coated in black but could then be painted if you really wanted it to match!
Safari Gard also do one. This is very, very expensive (I believe it comes out at over £1000).
D44 at Devon 4x4 are making their own but I couldn't say when it would be ready - spoke to them about it at Billing, but these things are slow to develop.

It would have worked without the comma at the end.

We are in the final stages of ours. I have attached a pic to give people an idea

I've been considering the TJM but do like the simple lines of both the Bearmach and the DiscoParts bumpers. Are either of these air bag compatible?
Tony[/quote]
-
Define 'air bag compatible" :?:
-
I would say as in accommodates crush cans? Not much point in having airbags if the bumper is so rigid that they'll never go off. Or is the Disco II airbag controlled in a different way?
I'm now also in the market for a new bumper, thanks to some idiot in a JCB.
-
Mark, as I understand it, some after market bumpers will not correctly allow the decelerometers to function correctly on the front of air bag equipped Disco 2s. Hence the air bag compatible question.
I understand that the TJM bumpers do, am unsure about the Bearmach and, obviously, yours is new!

The way the SRS ECU works is in two parts: shock force sensor and a decelerometer. This is located under the center console and has no direct connection with the bumper or crush cans.
Shock sensor - this works on the amount of shock load that is transmitted along the chassis. The crush cans are there to absorb some of the shock and therefore reducing the affect on the sensor. If you looked at a LR crush can against a ARB or TJM, then you'd wonder how the latter two would be able to deform (and therefore absord some of the shock) in an accident. No crush cans means that the required shock is transmitted sooner to the sensor to meet the required level to deploy the airbag.
Also you don't want a weak crush can that will deform whilst winching etc.
Decelerometer - doesn't matter what you have fitted to the front as this is purely down to how fast you slow down.
Both sensors have to register at the same time for the airbags to be deployed.
-
To rephrase then, does the BearMach bumper contain crush cans and will yours?
If not and I'm reading you correctly, then there is a chance that either the air bags will go off when you don't want then to or, more importantly (perhaps) will not go off in the event of an accident.

Heyup Mark,
Have you finished the Tubular Winch Bumpers yet? Looking forwards to the piccie of that one!

no.

The airbags will still go off but the shock forces will be meet a little sooner.
Offroading, where you hit something hard, you are not going fast enough for the decelerometer to come into affect - I have done this on several occasions.
You have to hit something hard enough and must be going fast enough for the sensor to register both at the same time, for the airbags to go off.

A couple of set backs, but hoping to have them finished for Xmas and powder coated 1st week of Jan. If I can get it all done for Xmas then I will.
Pic will follow.
