Title: Help to buy modified off road discovery
Post by: Matt_H on November 22, 2005, 09:25:47
My disco is going to be written off by the insurance company after the small fire from last weekend :-(

They've asked me if I know of any similar vehicles for sale to help with the value claim.

Does anyone have any links to discos for sale that have been modified?

Mine is presently 1990 diesel, 2" lift, snorkel, winch, winch bumper, modified wheel arches, light bar and other underbody protection.  Something similar would be appreciated.  (The car is insured for £3000 which I reckoned was about £1500 car and £1500 mods)

Your help is very much appreciated

Matthew

Sorry, can't help with any ads - but if it's any help I'd think your estimate is pretty close, must be some for sale out there like that.

Presumably you can remove the mods and then they'll give you replacement vehicle value anyway ? I know it's a lot of labour, but it's better than getting stitched up ..

Surely it should be irrelevant what it's worth or the cheapest you can replace the bits for.

Your vehicle no doubt had a declared value associated with it, they used that to calculate the premium for the insurance, they should give you that.   "Book Price" is all a glorified rip off if you ask me, either it's worth what I say it's worth, or it's worth whatever the book price is, don't charge me a premium for the one and then pay up a smaller amount because it suits.

If it was insured for £3000, then if its a write off then they should pay you £3000. Then you can ask if you can buy it back for the salvage value. When my last car was writen off the salvage price was £50.

what an insurance company does and what they 'should' do are two different matters.  They are perfectly in their rights to offer me much less money and then I would have to ultimatley take them to court - that would just cost too much time and effort!

The policy is not agreed value, although I have it in writing that all the modifications are covered for "market value".  I have documented proof of the value of the mods, just to need to get the icing now to make this go nice and smoothly.

When doing this sort of thing it helps to have examples of other similar vehicles to help them.

Oh and yes I will be asking for salvage rights!

It would be what you linked too rather than you, but I've just tried them and have found no problems..... and we have (in the same way you have) daily updated virus definition files and more protection than Saddam Hussein*

Probably a coincidence more than anything!

Possibly, you need to update your virus checker (what are you using?) or change it's settings as known viruses should be detected immediately rather than requiring you to do a manual scan. Of course, that's not 100% guaranteed

have got three running, occasionally do a manual scan to make sure, prob coincidence as said but mentioned it to be safe.

didn't think that ya'll did it on purpose fingers,

but these little [!Expletive Deleted!] get every where.. if i could have five mins in a dark room with the spoty little sods hat write the virus's i'd be happy  :(blackeye): as they've cost me an arm and a leg in bechams for pooters :(kerching):

?? will it? have a well known brand doing all the anti viral, firewall & blcker stuff automatically, then have x2 freebies that i manually use occasionally to do double check sweeps... is this not good, computer geek recommended it  not much of pc genius my self

problems arise if two virus checkers are trying to do real time scanning as they can fight against each other. If the other two arent doing anything unless you tell them to then it should be fine.
